Re: Funding the Next Game

I’m not sure how good/bad 450k estimated on console alone is for an indie studio of Playtonic’s size. Doesn’t seem awful? It seems there’s a lot of variables we don’t know, including, as Taylor says, their post-launch patching/porting efforts and their ratio of resource demand to lucurativeness. Lot...

Re: FINALLY - Switch release date!!!

^ Would love that if they did.

On Mario Odyssey — I wonder if it may have whet people’s appetites for this sort of game. Personally playing it makes me more excited about titles like Yooka and A Hat in Time

Re: Funding the Next Game

The above comment is so bitter and filled with assumptions. And IMO if this game ends up missing some magic, it will moreso be the lack Gregg Mayles influence/oversight than anything.

On topic: do we know how this game has sold?

Re: FINALLY - Switch release date!!!

Great to see the relative positivity in this topic. For those of us who have waited, I wonder if it will be for the best to be playing the game a) removed from some of the controversy b) removed from the massive weighty hype and c) post patch and hopefully well optimized I also think that this sort ...

Re: GameXplain: Super Mario Odyssey Discussion Brings Up Yooka-Laylee

It is very interesting how Mario Odyssey is more Banjo-like in some ways and I agree that Mario Odyssey has basically set a new standard. The approach to characters is a bit different, as Nintendo seems more focused on developing the different cultures in the game, as opposed to specific characters....

Re: GameXplain: Super Mario Odyssey Discussion Brings Up Yooka-Laylee

The comparisons are useful but not quite fair. Mario Odyssey is a AAA game with over two hundred (200!) devs working for nearly 4 years on an practically unlimited budget. Yooka Laylee was made by an average of like 12 people over 2 years. That’s not to say Yooka couldn’t have been a better game, bu...

Re: What the hell are you doing playtonic

I think Playtonic was right to put out that patch first, as it contains numerous tweaks and appears to address many complaints. We also know the port is up and running ... it's not like they've been neglecting to work on it. Would be nice if this could all happen overnight, but in reality this takes...

Re: Radio silence

I get that, but I mean we know it's on the way, and that this sort of thing takes time and effort. If they don't have solid information, then I'm not sure what the point in saying anything is .. I mean that would be pretty sloppy, really. As Reuck says, they may want to tweak some things before rele...

Re: Kind of surprised about fans reaction.

The thing most people dont talk about, is that the guy who designed this game is not from Rare's Nintendo golden age. He was one of the designers from Microsoft Rare, and all he really did was make mediocre/average games. 1. Many key staff do work at Playtonic 2. YL design lead Gav Price worked at ...

Re: Shared Universe and Next Game Protagonist

I think it would be more interesting if they used the characters they create as actors, so the designs appear in other games but they could have vastly different roles and characterisations. So Yooka could show up, but is playing a totally different role/character. I like the idea and definitely wa...

Re: Ideas for worlds

Personal wish: a harbor with a lighthouse Also DKC:TF had some great underused game environments: Mangroves Autumn / Germanic Savanna Also World 5 sort of made a fresh fusion of "factory" and "jungle." Would love to see a 3D world in the vein of any of these. Also really liked cl...

Re: Yooka Laylee is Nostalgia Gone Wrong

I feel like the "nostalgia" is thrown around in a derogatory sort of way a bit too often in gaming discourse.

Anyways, I'll always remember that Kotaku have us this nice article: https://www.google.com/amp/kotaku.com/w ... 621001/amp

Re: No rap in the game?

We already have a character parade trailer and the rap is on YouTube.
Sort of hope they patch some of this in, though it really comes down to what they feel works presentation-wise.

I haven't played the game, so can't speak to how the intro/ending is.

Re: The music was good, but not what I was expecting

Grant was always going to do the main world themes, I'm sure. Haven't listened to everything (waiting for the switch) but I would atribute the change in Grant's music to how his composing/style has changed over the years. I don't think Grant can "replicate" the melodic style of BK as that'...

DK Vine's initial impressions

Some very nice impressions from the singular Hyle Russell https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=agIYgoFk-n0 I particularly liked the part where he said (Spoiler-tagged, in case you want to take in the podcast without hearing its conclusion straight off!) "I haven't had this much fun playing a relea...

I'll admit: watched the video and it was brutal! The impressions were frustrated, ambivalent, and overall lukewarm at best... and coming Gamexplain. These three reviewers are nestled firmly within this games target demographic. They have an audience of mostly Nintendo fans with whom they've develope...

Re: Why isn't Switch version development number one priority?

I don't see why they can't optimize, seems essential for a small business. Certain devs on the team specialize in art or audio design so their full time work on porting Yooka would be wasteful

I've been busy and haven't had time to formulate a full impression. + Grin inducing + Baylis and Sutherland sound awesome + Yooka and Laylees dance moves + Heavily cheesy lyrics! + Musically interesting and catchy - Very similar to DK rap, obviously a throwback vs a novel take - Background crowd of ...

Re: POLL: Playtonic Kart Racer + Online Multiplayer

Kart Racer: Undoubtedly an exciting idea. Part of me would like to see another game to develop the cast, settings, and story a bit more. It was cool how Diddy Kong Racing preceded Banjo, Conker, and Star Fox Adventures, but I think the characters and environments lacked the strong sense of personali...
