Re: Playtonic's Next Move

Yeah, they should really reduce the scope of the next game if it brings bigger polish. Whenever I describe Rare to someone, I say that they matched and even surpassed Nintendo's own quality in games. Not sure I'd go quite that far, but you're certainly right about the polish. Smaller but more polis...

Re: Yooka-Laylee 2

Now that Y-L is done, I hope they'll do a non-platform game before launching into a sequel.
That way, they can look at the genre afresh and see objectively what does and doesn't work in their first game.

Re: Yooka-Laylee on Switch - first impressions (by first-timers!)

First thing I did was play on the multiplayer games with my girlfriend, she was as taken with them as I was. Especially the one with the ice platforms that disappear.

I've only just started the main mode, I'm already seeing Capital B as a baddy with figurative legs...

Re: Playtonic's Next Move

You’re probably right. That might be a good way to avoid most comparisons and start fresh. Maybe it’s just the Banjo fan in me that wants a critically acclaimed big 3D platformer right away. It’ll certainly bring some advantages if they do it later, too. Like having a bigger company and more capaci...

Rueckkoppler wrote:Oh yeah, I remember that Team17 guy on the Steam forums. Ben certainly did his best to make his company and Playtonic look like douchebags.

I'm almost certain that this is the end of Playtonic's dealings with Team17.
The PR fallout was striking, to say the least.

Re: Why So Much Hate???

I'd say there are three things to bear in mind with hate, specifically with regards to Y-L: 1) In this day and age, everyone can and will have an option on anything. Moreover, they will go out of their way to manufacture outrage: did anybody really give a toss about Neogaf either way before it came ...

Hope it doesn't tank completely.

This feels in some ways to me like Rare's last chance at glory.

A while off yet. Clearly it's still lucrative enough to be open for such a (very) long time.

Re: Playtonic's Next Move

Hard to say, I’d argue that they should immediately start developing a sequel to Yooka, with all the experience and criticism they earned with this. I think they can make a great sequel if they rely on their strengths and streamline a lot of things - while being a bit more confident with what they’...

Re: Playtonic Reddit AMA

A couple of things we can deduce from the answers:

* Sounds like they already are planning for their second game.
* It will likely be a different genre than YL.
* They have a very close relationship with Nintendo and Unity. This could be a hint of things to come.

Re: Playtonic's Next Move

There was an AMA on reddit yesterday and apparently they have more than one project in mind and they "don't want to limit [themselves] to any genre or size of game", though they haven't gone into details. When asked if they would consider working with Nintendo in a new DKC title they said...

Playtonic's Next Move

The day has come: Yooka-Laylee is out on all systems; barring the occasional patch here and there, that's the end of the company's first game. So once the team have recovered/gone on holiday, what comes next? * Perhaps they'll want to diversify their portfolio and jump into a totally different genre...

Well made.
I'll be more interested when he covers the Microsoft era and what went right/wrong there.

Re: Let's talk about Nuts & Bolts

I've tried a few times to get into it and I just couldn't.
I have always found it overcomplicated, boring and unbearably smug in terms of "the old games were tedious collect-a-thons, DUR HUR HUR!"

Of all the Rare IPs, this is the one I think is least likely ever to come back.
Not least since Chris Seavor was sacked and the team is moving on to very different things.

Re: What might happen to Playtonic if Yooka-Laylee flops...

Bumping this back up to ask: With the Switch version finally arriving in just under a fortnight's time, how has the game done so far? Is the company's future secure? I'm not sure about the sales but I'm pretty sure Playtonic was willing to go ahead with the game even if the kickstarter failed (it m...

Re: Funding the Next Game

The above comment is so bitter and filled with assumptions. And IMO if this game ends up missing some magic, it will moreso be the lack Gregg Mayles influence/oversight than anything. On topic: do we know how this game has sold? Not well from everything that I've been able to suss out. Steam penetr...

I'll snap it up at some point on Switch.

I do think they missed the bus coming after the impossibly impressive Super Mario Odyssey, but that's just the way it goes.

Re: Yooka-Laylee 2

I kind of hope they rest the platforming for a little while after this and try something utterly unrelated.

Maybe a fighter or a racer - more strings to the company's bow would mean they become much more acclaimed and impressive.
