Having this same issue, the first time it happened Windows 7 popped up with a message telling me my GPU had crashed and recovered. I changed the settings down to simple and then fastest and it still crashes on the same portion of the cinematic. After third crash it gave me an error log. It may be GPU incompatibility? I have an AMD GPU as well, but I didn't have problems like this in the Toybox. Very strange. First chunk of error log:

My system is a dual GPU Laptop, (better known as Switchable Graphics (or a PITA..)) so in addition to my last post:
* CPU: i7 2630QM
* GPU: AMD Radeon 6770m w/ 1 GB VRAM
* iGPU (integrated GPU): Intel HD Graphics 3000
So, maybe the crash is associated with the AMD Radeon 6xxx series AND/OR with the fact of the game or game's plugin failing to use correctly a hardware feature due of Switchable Graphics (e.g. when using Dolphin Emulator, it reports the Intel 3000 HD iGPU two times, duplicated, when in fact one of that "Intel 3000" is in fact the AMD Radeon).
Last to say, I managed to play the game by "forcing" or setting the game to load with the Intel 3000 HD iGPU.
Had to set everything to minimum, and went to 640x400 resolution ! (but hey, at least it worked).
If one has Switchable graphics, after passings the problematic scene, one can quit the game and switch back to the AMD GPU then continue with the good graphics.
Other possible workaround if you don't have switchable graphics could be to load someone else save data.
Obviously this is a temporary workaround.
Tested and worked with the Intel HD 3000 iGPU:
* Quality: Fastest, Resolution: 1280x720 -> Kinda playable, maybe around 16~20 FPS.
* Quality: Fastest, Resolution: 640x400 -> Playable at the N64 resolution... Truly nostalgic.
* Quality: Fantastic, Resolution: 320x200 -> Playable without definition (Seriously this resolution exists? One can't even read the menu texts lol).
