Yooka Laylee freezing and crashing in cinematic

Postby Aedonia » Tue Apr 11, 2017 9:36 pm

Hello devs and fellow players:

An hour ago or so, i downloaded and installed Yooka Laylee. Started playing and when clicking campaign, the very first cinematic that appears makes the game freeze and crash.

It freezes when the camera is about to approach the green doors.

Here are the specs of my PC:

AMD FX 6300 Six-core processor 3.50GHz
RAM 16Gb
Graphics Chipset: AMD Radeon HD 6670

I'm getting the exact same issue. In the debug log, I get these messages near the end:

Unloading 5 Unused Serialized files (Serialized files now loaded: 0)
UnloadTime: 0.372841 ms

Unloading 3 unused Assets to reduce memory usage. Loaded Objects now: 3710.

(Filename: Line: -1)

NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Hopefully the playtonic team can figure out what's going on here and fix it. I want to play the game!

There is an "exclusive mode" that can be selected when opening the game from steam, it supposedly runs better that way. While it hasn't worked for me yet, it may be because my pc is pretty bad, so you may want to try it out yourself.

Well, looks like i'm not alone.

In Windows 10 you can't get the error log apparently, because i tried several times and nothing. But i guess it's something similar for all of us.

I hope someone in Playtonic reads this...

To get the debug log, I went into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\YookaLaylee\YookaLaylee64_Data\output_log.txt

You guys should see if you get the same error as me. It might be why it's crashing, or it might not. Hard to say.

Well this is unfortunate...

Same specs and system and yours, except fo the OS.
* Hp Pavilion dv6
* Windows 10 x64
* GPU: AMD Radeon 6770m w/ 1 GB VRAM
* CPU: i7 2630QM, RAM: 8 gb RAM

Seems that the AMD Radeon 6xxxm mobile GPUs are cursed/affected by some bug (and maybe desktop versions too).

Tried Exclusive mode, all settings to minimum at native 1080 resolution and minimum resolution as well, no luck

One guess.. this bug may be related to a native plugin used by the game devs which interacts with Unity. The crash/access-violation may be created by a call to that plugin just before entering the building in the first cut scene, which seems to be incompatible with some features of this series cards (or even, inexistent features reported to be present on the GPU but are not).

If we could at least SKIP this cutscene.... oh well..

Related: Had a really hard time with something similar while developing some academic software in Unity with Oculus Rift DK2 with this same GPU and system almost 2 years ago. Still, I managed to get this working with a previous alpha release of Unity, and Oculus Unity-plugins and drivers. Later, Oculus released final drivers wich required 7xxx or 8xxx models and later because of the hardware features "needed". Even, this should NOT be the case (no VR drivers involved) but again could be related.

I forgot something important to say and maybe it's not clear on this post (porbably it's the case for some of us).

My system is a dual GPU Laptop, (better known as Switchable Graphics (or a PITA..)) so in addition to my last post:
* CPU: i7 2630QM
* GPU: AMD Radeon 6770m w/ 1 GB VRAM
* iGPU (integrated GPU): Intel HD Graphics 3000

So, maybe the crash is associated with the AMD Radeon 6xxx series AND/OR with the fact of the game or game's plugin failing to use correctly a hardware feature due of Switchable Graphics (e.g. when using Dolphin Emulator, it reports the Intel 3000 HD iGPU two times, duplicated, when in fact one of that "Intel 3000" is in fact the AMD Radeon).

Last to say, I managed to play the game by "forcing" or setting the game to load with the Intel 3000 HD iGPU.
Had to set everything to minimum, and went to 640x400 resolution ! (but hey, at least it worked).

If one has Switchable graphics, after passings the problematic scene, one can quit the game and switch back to the AMD GPU then continue with the good graphics.
Other possible workaround if you don't have switchable graphics could be to load someone else save data.

Obviously this is a temporary workaround.

Tested and worked with the Intel HD 3000 iGPU:
* Quality: Fastest, Resolution: 1280x720 -> Kinda playable, maybe around 16~20 FPS.
* Quality: Fastest, Resolution: 640x400 -> Playable at the N64 resolution... Truly nostalgic.
* Quality: Fantastic, Resolution: 320x200 -> Playable without definition (Seriously this resolution exists? One can't even read the menu texts lol).

Hi edmundo096, can you explain how did you do that?, i mean, run the game without the graphic card

@ccb A Graphic card is needed to run the game.

My laptop is a special case since it has 2 graphic cards (an AMD Radeon 6700m GPU, and an Intel HD 3000 integrated GPU (iGPU)) also known as Switchable graphics.
Not sure if Desktops PCs can have this as well. You could try searching if you have an Intel with HD graphics CPU or an AMD APU CPU with an affected AMD Radeon GPU (probably the 6xxx or 7xxx series ?).

I opened the AMD Catalyst Control Center and, inside power options, I added the game .exe and assigned it to the "Power Saver" (the Intel iGPU) instead of the "High Performance" AMD Radeon GPU.
Launched the game with Low settings, passed the cutscene, then switched the game back to the "High Performance" AMD Radeon GPU.

No problem. Glad at least it was useful for you.

To keep the request-for-the-fix alive, we could (and anyone else that ends up here) send an email request about the crash-bug, as they instructed here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5414#p33108

is strange that with the many people who has this issue it seems that there is no intention of fix it(not the save data bypass that is NOT a fix) maybe readeon hd users (me included)are ****ed.

Pretty much this. Looks like we're fucked even though we paid good money for the game.

My system is a dual GPU Laptop, (better known as Switchable Graphics (or a PITA..)) so in addition to my last post:
* CPU: i7 2630QM
* GPU: AMD Radeon 6770m w/ 1 GB VRAM

This worked for me! Once the cut scene was over I switched to my Radeon through the Catalyst Control Center and man the game plays much better than on the integrated graphics. Thanks for this workaround!
