What other world themes would you like to see?

Postby Gorjo » Sat Dec 02, 2017 12:15 am

So in YL we got a jungle, a snowy mountain, a swamp, a casino and space; what do you think should come next? What would you personaly like to explore?

Should they cover other typical game locations like a desert or a beach? Or should they go all out crazy, like say the intestines of a living planet while disguised as a salamander?

Personaly while it has been done to death I would love a creepy Halloween world, I can never get tired of those, and there could be a joke or two about how some people find bats and reptiles scary.

(There was a thread like this one some time ago but since now we know how the game functions I thought it would be better to make a new one.)

I don't care as much for the theme if it’s visually pleasing and has a smart layout. But when I think about it, I prefer organic looking places and of course dark, gloomy areas.

I would love to see a Lava/Volcano world. Yeah, pretty basic theme but I always like that kind of levels. A world inside a human body would be interesting too...

Industrial and/or spooky themes rock. Sadly, both were more or less covered with Moody Maze Marsh already, but neither was done in a way that was all that satisfying.

In general, I prefer "manmade place" themes (like Rusty Bucket Bay, Witchy World, Grunty Industries, Clanker's Cavern) and "genre" themes (Mad Monster Mansion, Gobi's Valley, Treasure Trove Cove) over "elemental" themes like "ice", "lava" (sorry Omega) and so on. A manmade place can have many different areas, and a genre can have many different aspects, but an element will always be that. Freezeezy Peak is a good example of an elemental theme (ice) being combined with a genre theme (christmas) to make sure the level has more variety. Glitterglaze Glacier has that little castle subtheme, but just like with Moodymaze Marsh, it's not developed enough to make the level feel like more than "lots of ice" to me.

So, a factory or plant would still be great (could effortlessly be combined with something like a lava subtheme). Or a spooky castle level, e.g. with a frankenstein-y lab. A junkyard level with toxic waste and sewers. And, to repeat what I wrote then, a run-down tourist trap at a grimy lake, with hotel, camping site and roach NPCs.

I was about to say a world where everything is huge, like a house, with Yooka and Laylee being the size of insects or toys, but then I remembered Clive 'n Wrench is going to have just that, so instead I would love to see the opposite: a world where eveything is tiny, specifficaly a city, with Yooka and Laylee as "giants" like Godzilla or King Kong, and the enemies could be themed after tanks, planes and robots.

I was hoping for a desert, and a lava world. Please have those in Tooka-Laylee.

I think the developers of Clive n Wrench do it right with the number of worlds and also with the world themes.
There is a godzilla/king kong themed world called Lungfishopolis in Psychonauts which is also a 3d platformer and a good example for good world design.

I like the idea with the hotel could be even mixed with horror genres to be a homage to friday the 13.
I also posted a similiar idea with a hotel but on a polluted tourist beach with a oil well in the water.

What about a farm level? That would give a number of areas to explore: the farmer's house, the barn, the chicken coop, the pig pen, the different paddocks, the tractor etc.

And with the range of animals in the level, imagine all the interesting problems they could have for Yooka and Laylee to solve.

Maybe the farmer captured the Knights of Hamalot and Yooka and Laylee have to help them escape becoming bacon.

The farmer could have also captured Capital B and his Corplet Drones for a bee hive colony that has some sort of energy field in place that only lets the bees fly close to the farmland. However the energy field is about to break so Yooka and Laylee must repair it somehow to stop Capital B escaping (eg. by finding spare parts, or replacing the batteries).

You could have a horse race mini game (although that might bee too similar to the Zelda games?), or a mini game where you have to help heard sheep.

There could be a fussy hen that requests Yooka and Laylee to bring her only the finest quality bunches of hay for her to build her nest out of.

Or a farm cat too lazy to catch the mice that are getting into the grain, so Yooka and Laylee have to catch the mice for it.

Another idea: a big film and TV studio complex with multiple stage warehouses, as then each stage could have a different film/TV genre set up in front of the cameras, plus there's also all the behind-the-scenes places you could explore like the rigging catwalks above the set where all the lighting is hung from, the control room where all the monitors are showing each stage's camera images, the green room or trailers where the stars hang out, the hair and make-up area and the costume storeroom.

Or a museum with all different display areas: the ancient history eras display, the space display, the science display, the animal display, the health and nutrition display etc.

Love spooky levels like mad monster mansion or creepy castle. There was something almost fairy tale like about the levels in B-K B-T and DK64. What if they did something like visit Hamelot and it has a day/night transition like Fungi forest and it is overrun with ghouls and monsters. You can only get certain pagies during the day or night too.

Another thing I really like is an ancient civilization themed level. Gobi’s valley was a favorite world of mine in B-K, and while Egyptian world is s bit overdone something like the Incas or Almecs might do just as well.

Lastly a tropical resort themed level where the resort is run by the baddies and security is trying to get you. While exploring the resort you can find hidden pagies, earn them by helping the overworked staff, helping guests with their problems, playing beach games, and participating in events throughout the resort.

One world type I've been dying to see in Banjo - and thus now Yooka-Laylee - would be a cowboy themed world. Old west town, railroads, mines - stuff like that. Other than that, I'd like to see generic themes "spiced up," like how Hailfire Peaks had a Roman flare on the fire side (in addition to the juxtaposition of fire and ice together), or like how Mayahem Temple was sort of the generic "green" or "jungle" level, but added in the idea of ancient Mayan civilization. I'd like to avoid just doing another "jungle," "ice," or "swamp" world, as those types of places can get boring very quickly.

I would like to see a super hero world were most of the characters are "not so super" and they would need to show their powers to their fans.

So if there is a giant rock blocking an entrance you go in stealth mode and somehow blow the boulder (with TNT maybe) and all the fans will be amazed by the heroe/heroin. You get a pagie for helping.

A scientific lab world would be nice too! Maybe helping some npcs recovering their natural color giving them tonics you get from a cauldron or scientist.

Helping a Giant npc get back to normal size that is blocking a the exhausts pipe on an "about to explode" machine.

Mostly you would have to find all the right tonics scattered in the world and find out who should you give it to. (Kinda like the snowmans but without the copy pasted npcs).

An entire level on top of a huge turtle. There are big mosquitoes but the turtle can't swat them because he's a turtle so you help him out.

That sounds cool but I don't know if they'd be able to give it the right amount of verticality. Maybe if it's a farm themed level that doesn't really look like a real farm.

Good point, although maybe it could be a really hilly farm? For example the farmhouse sits up on a tall hill and the barn is on another smaller hill next to that, and the damn is at the bottom of the hills etc.

I've visited the Hobbiton set in New Zealand which is actually a working sheep farm, and the reason it was chosen as a film location was because of all the nice hills that they thought would be perfect for depicting The Shire in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.

Good idea. It could also be an Scottish coast with a layout similar to that of Treasure Trove Cove.
