Delightful Details

Postby ShanPen » Sat Jan 27, 2018 5:25 am

Since so much work goes into all the aspects of creating a game, I thought I'd start a topic where we can marvel at any small details found in the game that you thought were amusing and deserve to be pointed out so that other fans of the game who might have missed them can appreciate them too, and to show Playtonic that we appreciate the little things they've put into the game.

It could be something visual, a sound effect, or even a funny character or place name (such as "Dr. Puzz" sounding like "Octopus" when you say it fast) - whatever you'd like to share.

Here are some visual ones I have to share with screenshots.

The King on the card showing out of the top of the card deck enemies is Capital B! :o
Image

The hieroglyphs around the walls of Capital Cashino repeatedly spell "PLAYTONYC [sic] GAMES YOOKA LAYLEE" (someone in the team needs to go back to Gobi's Valley to brush up on their hieroglyphics!).
Image

The carpet pattern contains the conical flask and triangle shapes from the Playtonic Games logo.
Image

Amusing book title "How to use hexagons in all your home decorating!". Capital B certainly read that book thoroughly when designing his lair!
Image

Amusing book title "50 Shaders of Games". I haven't found this book anywhere else in the game yet.
Image

The "Slippy Edition" of the book "The Slide From The Top" because the book is angled to form a slide.
Image

A matching "Step Edition" called "To The Top! How I Stepped Up!" when the books form stairs.
Image

The special "Domino Edition". ;)
Image

Poor discarded "Vice-Prezedent" Dr. Quack statue abandoned in a lonely corner of the Hivory Towers Lair.
Image

Love the "Pants and why you should wear them" brochure taking a light-hearted stab at the people who complained that Yooka needed pants when the title characters were first revealed.
Image

Some helpful tips on the back of the multi-coloured paint tin, such as "Do not paint your cat" and "Do not apply to butt".
Image
Please post anything amusing you have noticed, as I'd love to see what other fans have found!

A few more:

The Playtonic Games logo on one side of treasure coins, and Capital B's face on the other side.
Image

The island where the pigs and Shovel Knight are searching for pirate treasure is shaped like a skull and crossbones.
Image

Capital B's prestigious top office floor is denoted by a dollar sign on the elevator sign.
Image

Dr. Quack has turned the service lift/dumbwaiter on the side of Hivory Towers into his own personal lift, complete with dodgy little ramp.
Image

Trust the Playtonic team to come up with the character of a mooning moon called "Moonie".

Since there’s no like button here, I’ll just say thank you for that great post, it was a good read! (Got nothing to contribute at this time though  )

Nice! :D
I never liked the washed-out red look of that part of the ship because I like bold colours and it didn't seem to match the bold colours of the rest of the ship, but I never realised that it was faded due to people walking on it, so I'm glad you pointed that out! Now the faded colour won't annoy me anymore. :)

Graffiti on the "Bat Ship Crazy" - "BATS R COOL", "YOOKA WOZ ERE", and the mysterious "Penny" (underneath a picture of a heart with an arrow through it).
Image
(The same image with the colour settings altered so the graffiti stands out more).
Image

EDIT: Went back to the area and found some more graffiti names, "Evie" and "Erin".
Image
(Same image with colour editing for clarity).
Image

Also on the topic of mysterious graffiti, this shows up out the front of, and inside, the space level.

The initials of the heading spell "TWIT". Also the lack of a possessive apostrophe in "Trowzers" makes it feel even more authentic that he's a dodgy salesman who can't even get the grammar in his advertising sign right.

Anyone know why there's a Laylee face constellation, but not a Yooka one? (Or has anyone found a Yooka one in another level?).

This is such an awesome post by the way! Lots of stuff I didn't know about, or had simply forgotten about. The Dr Quack statue confused me when I first saw it as it's identical to the one underneath Capital B's golden statue, right? So why is there a second one? I thought it might have been some sort of secret, so I was hitting it and all sorts, but nope, nothing.

I'm not 100% sure, but it was always in the concept art:

I guess it's because Laylee is the one that can fly? But then, it makes you wonder how (if at all) this fits into the in-game lore. Why and how is there a constellation of her face?

They should have called it Twowzers Worldwide Awesome Traders...

Oh I didn't even think to try hitting it to see if it was some kind of secret, good thinking (even though it turned out not to be)! It would have been funny if the Dr Quack statue that was under the golden Capital B statue did disappear after the dialogue where Capital B told Dr Quack to get rid of it (like maybe when you get back to the hub world after visiting your first Grand Tome, the Dr Quack statue is gone), and then you find it discarded in that lonely corner much later on in the hub world.

I checked out the sky in the space level but there was no Yooka face constellation. Then I thought, maybe the Laylee face constellation is Galleon Galaxy as seen from Glitterglaze Glacier! :o

Haha nice, I bet they wanted to call it something like that, but thought they'd better not as some offended soccer mum would complain, so they went with the safer option. I'm sure the Playtonic team had a good snigger at "Twowzers Worldwide Awesome Traders" (and whatever other much cruder options they no doubt brainstormed) before settling with the tamer version.

Thanks to everyone who has said they've enjoyed this thread, I've had so much fun searching through the game for amusing details, and fun sharing them with everyone here. Hopefully there'll be many more amusing details to look out for in the DLC, right Daley? ;)
