You almost always talked to the same characters (and there were only a few), while these conversations never ever went beyond basic gameplay-instructions. I missed the little stories all the characters in the Banjo games had, which made the worlds feel pretty stale (for me at least).

Yeah I got that vibe from the game as well. When it comes to the cast of supporting characters, the Banjo games have DK64 beat. It's just the amount of collectibles in DK64 that I enjoyed. It really encourages you to actually explore every nook and cranny of the world in a non-linear fashion.

Banjo-Tooie was a pretty good mix of DK64's large, collectible-filled worlds and Kazooie's pure character and charm.

But I can't stress enough awesome this game's music is:

Diddy's Jet Pack (a perfect bastard of the jungle japes theme and Grant's metal past): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uakPJhG9kYU

Creepy Castle (a whole song based on the intro melody of the original Donkey Kong): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y30r88k5M0A

Jungle Japes (if you know and appreciate Grant's style, you simply cannot dislike this Kirkhopified DKC classic): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W928muwER5E

Mad Jack (probably the creepiest Rare track by him, even more dramatic in this remake): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7w-KYXNnIE

Fungi Forest (in this case, probably Grant's magical tune. That night version is a perfect companion to this track): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mafPZBnkDVE

Crystal Caves (same goes to this one as well!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhJsbHTE-d8

... oh well, I went quite offtopic with this one. Isn't there a DK64 appreciation thread somewhere? Anyways, THAT'S something I seriously loved about this game.

^ Thx for the links, ah.

This game was just painful to go back and play on Wii U VC. Wish I hadn't -tainted my nice memories. BK/BT held up so well; but DK64's problems are much deeper than overkill on collectibles.
I still love the games cheesy humor, music, and atmosphere there. It's unmistakably Rare. Multiplayer is still fun for me, also!

The unmarked backtracking was worse than it was in BT, and having to backtrack to character barrels to get character specific bananas was tedious. If you could use the D-pad to instantly swap characters and either nothing required things from future worlds *or* the only times they'd require it would be clearly segregated from the main segments of the worlds, then the quantity would have been fine.

Mainly this..
I don't mind BT though. Being able to go back to an existing area and unlocking a new part was actually awesome and can make a level more memorial. But however, too much backtracking like DK64 (Don't even get me started...) was just a lot of un-fun work I think. Haha!

Exactly how I feel! BT was awesome and loved how you could get all puzzle pieces at once and needed to do something in a future world then come back. BT did it right. DK64 as much as it was my favourite DK game it was a bit too much cause it wasn't just once you had to go back but 4 times for each Kong.

Oh my gosh, I never realized Creepy Castle had the original Donkey Kong melody. Creepy Castle has always been my favorite song in DK64, but now my admiration for it has multiplied. :o

Some people might threaten to shoot me for saying this, but after playing both Banjo games and DK64 this year, I had the most fun playing DK64. It could have just been because I've played and beaten the Banjo games 10 times and DK64 only twice, but Kazooie's incredibly easy difficulty and Tooie's tedious backtracking kept me from really enjoying them. Tooie is still my favorite game of all time, though, even if it is just due to nostalgia.

I managed to complete Donkey Kong 64 101% in 6 days the last time I played it.
How I spent my holidays. :D

I prefer DK64 collectables than Banjo Kazooie.

I did as well actually, I'm a hamster. Can't explain it otherwise.

You know what games I like more? Clicker games. Pressing a friggin button for a whole day. Damn that can be satisfying beyond control.

... Can you imagine I'm actually hyped for Clicker Heroes 2?
