Seems it's pretty finished then. I'm sure we'll get a release date at e3.

It looks very good actually, probably better than YL1 looked to be honest.

The one thing I want to stress most to the Devs if they happen to read this

IT NEEDS DIFFICULTY

Many of the Donkey Kong Country games had very challenging levels. All these retro-style 2D platformers are only good if they capture the spirit of the 8/16 bit eras, DIFFICULT games.

Tough, but fair. I found YL1 to be overall too easy, so I'm hoping they really up the challenge level for this game.

I think a lot of people forget this, but Banjo-Kazooie wasn't really about "difficulty", at least in the way your thinking off. It was more about exploring worlds at your own pace, which Yooka-Laylee also did.

2D Platformers can be different, though, and I do think this game will provide a fair amount of challenge to complete.

Also I don't want to get too hyped in case we're disappointed again, but I had the thought that maybe Playtonic went 2D with this one, so as not to have to compete with a certain 3D platformer that everyone is hoping will finally be announced at E3 this year? :o

Hahah, damn girl! That's some upper class hyping over here...
And I like it! :D

Haha well the excitement of seeing the trailer for the new Yooka-Laylee game got to me and being in such a good mood, I couldn’t help getting hyped for what else we might see revealed. Also after watching the video Scrubber posted in the other thread, I think it might be even more likely!

Anyway, back to Yooka-Laylee; for anyone wondering, that bee character is “Queen Phoebee”.

From Playtonic’s news page on their website (which also answers some questions about the new game such as “Is this a sequel?” and “Will there be physical versions of the game?” - check it out here if you want to read more https://www.playtonicgames.com/new-game-yooka-laylee-and-the-impossible-lair/), they say this about the Queen:

Playtonic Games wrote:You’ll meet some familiar faces, and some new ones, as you help Queen Phoebee restore order to the Royal Stingdom.

I just read this article (https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2019/06/07/announcing-yooka-laylee-and-the-impossible-lair/) about the new game, and they said:

Gavin Price wrote:We wanted to ensure our beloved lizard and bat weren’t in for an easy ride, or going to be restricted to pre-set points on a path to the end. No way! They had to take on all the adventurous challenges, twists and turns we could throw at them.

Gavin Price wrote:The aim with Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair was always to give players an experience that challenges and excites them in a variety of ways. One moment you’re tackling a 2D level with vigour, the next you are quietly solving a puzzle in the 3D Overworld

Gavin Price wrote:...we will be keeping a googly eye on the internet to see who will be the first to beat the Impossible Lair*.

*It is technically possible, please don’t sue us.

The whole article is interesting and worth a read. A couple of other points from the article I thought that might interest people:

•It has been in development for 2.5 years already.
•Trowzer returns in this game.

We already know trowzer returns because weve seen him. Can't imagine how much help NPCs could offer in a 2d game though?

They can sell items (shop), teach moves, offer advice, give hints, trade items/currency, host minigames, etc.
Lots of possibilities actually!

I just hope we can still feel ‘BK’s soul’ while playing the game (which shouldn’t be a big probleem seeing Y&L are the “new” B&K).

I read that someone here said that they want a DK-style buddy system for the game, but I prefer a BK buddy system for this game 100%, as DKC games are still alive & kicking and thus we already have access to such a buddy system! The more BK influences, the better (imo)! :D

But the modern DKC games don't use the classic buddy system. The partner Kongs function more like Kazooie and Laylee, except that you can swap them out in Tropical Freeze.

Oh I must have missed him when I watched the trailer.

In that same article I mentioned above, they said this about Trowzer:

Gavin Price wrote:Plus, it gave Trowzer a new business venture worth his while too – everybody’s “favourite” serpent salesman has returned with deals players literally can’t refuse.

Because they said he has a new business venture, that sounds like he might not be selling moves in this game. So maybe it’s something like having to pay tolls to Trowzer in the 3D overworld in order to pass through gates/cross bridges to get to new areas containing entry to new 2DS levels?

I was talking about the whole swapping out part + I like both character to be able to function at the same time and do combo moves (not 1 or 2, but a lot of ‘em)!

It’s pretty cool that this game is coming out with physical editions for all consoles at the same time. And while it’s not entirely specific when it’s going to release we do know it’s going to release this year, “sooner than you think” apparently.

It’s all pretty exciting. The more I think about it the more excited I get. The game looks great, it harkens back to a style similar to Donkey Kong Country: tropical freeze which is a game I really love (second behind DKC2). It also looks like it still maintains the charm of the first game but with a dash of more creativity.

I still want an eventual Tooka-Laylee, but I’m more than happy with this in the meantime.

Now I understand why they announced this before e3. It would have been completely over shadowed by Banjos return.

I'm more of a DKC fan than a BK fan, and in general of 2D platformets, so this game actually has me more exited than the original YL (especially since I don't have the means to play DKC Tropical Freeze so far). The game still needs and deserves to be judged on its own terms (maybe it's the music but it seems to have a slower pace and a more relaxing tone than DKC games).
As a bonus the 3D overworld parts remind me of a 2D Zelda game and I'm a Zelda fan too. This combination is very interesting, like two games in one. I wonder if the team split to work on them separately.

Oh that’d be really interesting to find out.
If they do a developer commentary for this game, or if at any point they ask for questions from fans, you should ask them that.

It was already a foregone conclusion that I'll buy this as soon as it comes out, but now that I've seen the gameplay demo I'm actually excited to play it! The trailer was nice an all, but this demo did a much better job of showing the game off. That's to be expected I suppose. I only wish I could properly hear the level music while they were playing it. Hopefully it won't be too long before they release a gameplay video like this with nothing but the in-game audio.

Probably the best info from the demo video is that the game has
40 levels once you take into account the normal 20 levels can be completely transformed into a different kind of level.
Not clear on if the Impossible Lair itself is counted in that level total. Depending on how you count the levels and boss/lair levels, that looks like roughly
the same number as the original Donkey Kong Country.

An interesting quote from the article at https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-06-08-playtonic-we-are-never-using-the-term-spiritual-successor-again?fbclid=IwAR1D_RCP-WZkrqc8rKZj7GIUni99_ljziVsVgLVqNXuAyUKevmoDss2wLxQ:

The Impossible Lair is due this year and Price let slip that the game is already about to enter certification. So it's nearly ready.
