Re: lives or no lives?

That hindrance is the punishment. If restarting the level after failing it isn't punishment, then you're going to have to give an example of punishment in a game. I'll give several. - Banjo Kazooie, when you lose all your lives you have to backtrack through the overworld. You've already traveled th...

Re: lives or no lives?

This idea, in addition to almost everything I see pop up on the board if we're being honest, is something I think Playtonic need to think about and decide on on their own . I fully trust Playtonic to make an appropriately difficult game, with appropriate difficulty options. I like talking about thi...

Re: lives or no lives?

Lives are pointless nobody runs out of them unless they're really bad at the game. Might aswel have no lives. I'm currently playing through mario3dWorld and have about 119 lives, they are pointless. It depends on the game. If you play Plok or Battletoads they're just annoying. The only thing worse ...

Re: lives or no lives?

You can say the life mechanic is a dated idea, but whose to say you can't still do something with it? Increasing the punishment after losing all lives (something in game, not being taken back to the title screen) or maybe have lives delay the punishment for death but still have a minor set back for...

Re: Hub world is a most for this game

I disagree really. I think Tooie had a good setup. I liked the larger world size, and before you could warp you had to go there at least once on foot. The connections are very clear: Banjo's House -> Spiral Mountain -> Tunnel -> Jinjo Village -> Bottle's House -> was the first region and from there...

Re: lives or no lives?

What could be "fun and challenging" for one player could be "hard and annoying" for another. This is just wrong. Something that's punishing is objective. If it only requires you to recomplete content in the exact same way you already did, it's punishing. This isn't something tha...

Re: lives or no lives?

I'm definitely liking the discussion we're having here. It would be cool to have a setting for your experience. Maybe a retro mode with lives and secondary collectables (notes) being reset after death but with your record for that world saved. Then you can have millennium mode (get it? Because tooi...

Re: lives or no lives?

Which is why most games let you choose difficulty. Difficulty rarely (if ever) affects how punishing a game is, as opposed to its difficulty. Making you repeat an entire level or half the game every time you die doesn't make it harder, just more punishing. Upping the stats on enemies, adding mechan...

Re: How challenging do you think it will be?

La Mulana and Banjo Kazooie have entirely different types of secrets. With very, very few exceptions BK uses solely lock-key (each solution only solves one puzzle and each puzzle requires only one solution) puzzles and ability puzzles; in contrast, La Mulana has these in addition to research puzzles...

Re: Thoughts on DLC

There's three kinds of DLC, and people seem to be using one as a strawman for why we can't have another. 1) On disc DLC. Notoriously popularized by Capcom, this is essentially cut content from the game that could've easily been an unlockable, like an extra skin for Street Fighter or a new character ...

Re: Hub world is a most for this game

Well designed hub worlds are always a great idea, but I hope Playtonic avoids the issues Tooie's had. Being able to directly warp from one segment to another instead of limited warps like in BK or added mobility like flying in Super Mario Galaxy completely removed any sense of each segment of the hu...

Re: lives or no lives?

The game can't punish the player too much that the game stops being fun. The same goes with lack of punishment. Example: I have a hard time continuing to play Borderlands after I die because I realize the punishment isn't very severe and I can pretty much just pick up where I died at. Which is why ...
