Re: What are the quintessential elements of a RARE game?

The first things to come to mind would be a sense of fun, a quirky sense of humour and a British point of view.

Also, taking some inspiration from what Nintendo has recently done; e.g. Kameo was initially inspired by Pokémon, BK by Super Mario 64, etc.

Re: Less Hope For Yooka Laylee?

It's understandable that people might be wary when video game-related kick-starters don't deliver what they promised and thus make backers lose faith in them (e.g. Mighty No 9).
All that Playtonic needs to do is show that it's a company that delivers on its promises.

THAT is how it makes its mark.

The plot of Yooka-Laylee as an allegory...?

I don't think this has been discussed yet on the forum to a great extent - at least I've not seen any threads about it - but looking again at the synopsis for Yooka-Laylee, is it perhaps to some extent an allegory for recent developments with Rare as a company from the perspective of people who rece...

Re: If YL/Playtonic succeeds, could we see even more former Rare talent join in?

I have a feeling that several ex-Rare staff are waiting to see how Yooka-Laylee turns out before sending in their CVs - this is after all a brand new company with limited funding (successful though the Kickstarter was, there's still only so much money in the kitty) and previously successful develope...

Re: Lets discuss THAT topic...

Reading all the previews it doesn't seem like fans or the media are completely willing to drop the whole Rare vs Playtonic topic... ... whatever the facts may be ... a) While the informed will argue Rare has continued to do great work, the fact is that "the public" at large are disappoint...

Re: Lets discuss THAT topic...

After nearly 15 years as a division of Microsoft, Rare is almost unrecognisable from its days as a Nintendo partner. The company has been through some great ordeals since 2002; some of the most salient are the terrible flops of Ghoulies, Conker L&R and Kinect Sports Rivals, the mass exodus of th...

Re: Playtonic's next project

I suspect the company will want to diversify and do something totally unrelated to platforming for a second game.

Maybe a Killer Instinct-type fighter?

Re: Nintendo e3 stream

According to Minamoto-san, they'll need to sell 2 million copies of Breath of the Wild to turn a profit.

Considering how it's a launch title for NX as well as being released on Wii U, it should achieve this with consummate ease.

Wondering how this could be revived - since Warner Bros swallowed up Midway after the latter went under, is the idea now owned by Warners?

Re: 5 things you didn't know about Banjo-Kazooie

Piccolo makes sense for Tooty - even though the "-o" ending makes it sound masculine. Likely why it was changed. I'm pretty sure it's actually because Tooty becomes Green in the game over credits and that would be absolutely guaranteed copyright infringement against Dragon Ball Z and way ...

"Geist" developer n-Space has closed down

Anyone remember "Geist" on the Nintendo GameCube?

The developer of that, n-Space, has shut down.
Yet another developer axed in March 2016. There must be something in the water.

Sony axes Evolution Studios

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/22/sony-shuts-evolution-studios-video-game-driveclub?CMP=twt_a-technology_b-gdntech That Sony kills this first-party developer one week after the song-and-dance Sony made of hiring staff from the similarly defenestrated Lionhead makes them seem VERY dod...

Re: Microsoft to axe Lionhead Studios

In the past couple of weeks, Microsoft has been making some VERY surprising decisions, each of which will have ramifications for a long time to come: *Using Young Conker to sell its Hololens device (the success of which is still VERY much in the air). *Announcing the merger of the Xbox and PC divisi...
