I think take it seperately. Don't compare them. It would be like comparing mascots such as Sonic, Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Banjo and Spyro. Even DK. There are similarities but they are their own thing. A lot of DK64 was very similar to Banjo in many ways (Fungi Forest was planned to be a Banjo level!), so the best thing to do is love them all for what they are. Let Yooka-Laylee be what it is. Early judgements are probably going to be wrong when you get playing the game I would say.
"Just wait until Banjo-Threeie..." Still waiting Grunty!

I noticed that criticism too, and if "it's too much like this really fantastic game" is the worst criticism we have right now then that's pretty good

Like others have stated, that's the point really (being a spiritual successor and all that good stuff).

I'd be worried if it weren't very much like Banjo Kazooie, it seems to totally be on the right track so far.

My feelings are that the development team should work on getting the fundamentals correct before they try to do things better and or differently. Being derivative is not necessarily a bad thing, especially in this particular genre. One of the major issues that arises when being derivative is that if you fail to do something to the level at which your inspiration achieved, that failure will stick out like a sore thumb and people will ask "well why didn't they do it like this?", while pointing to the original.

Seeing as members of the team are veterans from Banjo-Kazooie, I would reserve any judgement until we have a playable demo in our hands and can see what has been built.

It is my hope that the end result is very similar to Banjo-Kazooie or its sequel, because those are two excellent games and I can definitely play more. The worry I have is that they may do something too similarly and trip someone's copyright alarm or something of that sort.

Seeing as this is a spiritual successor, I don't understand how it can be TOO much like Banjo-Kazooie, except if they copy paste the characters and/or level designs or something. I find that this looks like a fun game that can stand on its own despite borrowing many elements from Banjo-Kazooie.

Indeed. And I suppose it is difficult to escape the "it's like BK" comparisons when there aren't many games to pull from that have the player-character duo.

It's going to be really awkward if the real Banjo Threeie gets announced at E3.

I've waited over a decade for a true sequel to Banjo-Tooie, and I wouldn't mind at all that this game is "too much like Banjo". It's exactly what I've waited for all these years :3

I think we had a lack of Banjo-Kazooie quality games for a couple generations
