According to the Kickstarter page, "Play Tonics" will allow you to modify the game however you'd like...

Does anyone get a "Cheat" vibe from this? Like these are going to be the equivalent of collecting Cheato pages? If so, then I like the idea, especially if it's completely optional. If you want, you can make the game easier through these Play Tonics, but if not, then you can just as easily ignore them or turn them off once you've activated them, just like the Cheats in Banjo-Kazooie and particularly Banjo-Tooie.

Can you snag a quote from the KS (and even a link to that particular page if it's an update?)

I think a PlayTonic could easily just be the logo they have at the top of this page. Drink it, and you get a super power which is more classically known as a cheat.

Yeah I saw the part about Play Tonics but didn't really have any thoughts since there weren't many details. They said they'd make you run faster or jump higher and other stuff, but not if they're on a level to level basis, or challenge to challenge, or if it's a power, or if it's like a cheat.

Dunno.

Interested to see how they work though!

Oh, when I first read that section of the kickstarter, I thought the Play Tonics were the little coins to collect, then you could spend them somehow to buff your stats (damage, jump height, etc.)

"Play Tonic" doesn't make sense to be those coins. A tonic is a type of medical drink, often associated with power-ups etc. in games and cartoons. I imagine them to be similar to Cranky Kong's power-ups in DK64; they'd look like the Playtonic logo, but perhaps different colours would change your stats. E.g. red for strength.

Someone had already suggested "Play Tonics" as a collectible, but their use for them was slightly off: http://forums.playtonicgames.com/viewto ... onic#p2144

I don't think those coins are play tonics since if play tonics were to function as upgrades, they wouldn't be everywhere. But who knows?

The Kickstarter page confirms the coins mentioned above are their placeholder for the Note equivalent collectable, that they're likely going to change in the development process. A Play Tonic is likely to be a floating, spinning vial of drink, though I think it'll have the same appearance for each one - The Kickstarter implies you'll be able to choose how it works, how it improves your gameplay, not that each one will do a specific upgrade.

^I think they were talking about collectibles in general, and not specifically about those coins. Why not just make a simple gold coin if that were the case?

Seems pretty obvious to me that you collect those playtonic coins (notice the blue triangles on the coins, and the blue triangles in the playtonic logo) to purchase/craft Play Tonics (the flask itself). It's likely a cheat or a helpful assist like that potion in Donkey Kong Freeze.

Aah, the (musical) bit is rather significant, isn't it?
You're right, I think you're right on the money with the the tonics. I wonder whether there might be optional inaccessible areas until you gain enough upgrades for, say, flight distance. Perhaps you can't run through some sort of trap until your speed is fast enough? Or perhaps a better alternative would be that you can take advantage of shortcuts you would otherwise have been unable to? I can already see the speed runs maximizing the flight distance early on.

Then again, the "customise gameplay to suit your style" bit seems to suggest it'll be less mandatory/game changing, and more minor personal tweaks.
