Villain of Yooka-Laylee?

Seriously, just because it is a spiritual successor doesn't mean the villain must be a witch.
The protagonists aren't a bear and bird either.

I do think it could be an old hag like Grunty though. Someone else brought it up, that it could be an old librarian. Something along those lines.
Maybe she didn't like the "ghost" writers books, because she feared they would bring too many younger kids into her library. Because she values silence very highly, she decided to just kill the authors and banish their restless spirits into their own, unfinished stories.

Okay maybe you need some kind of magic to do that.

Well, whoever they use, they better be memorable if they intend the series to make a splash and stick around for sequels. They can't just trade off nostalgia and fans already in-the-know. A chameleon and bat are cute and admirably expressive for their design and animation, but offbeat for what consumers are used to. Playtonic needs to start marketing the duo in ads YESTERDAY to gain a new audience to grow with and revive its Kickstarter campaign. The plot (as revealed so far) doesn't grab your imagination b.c. it immediately implies a send-up structure of literary works. This also (perhaps unfairly) implies a gimmicky, one-off villain whose purpose is more suited to the circumstance (book anthology-themed, or worse--"games-arent-what-they-used-to-be"-themed) than the world the protagonists live in. The Banjo-Kazooie franchise is memorable for its characters as they interacted wih eachother--not because they had anything in particular to say.

The Point: up-sell the protagonists, make the villain memmorable.

You know, concerning that traitorous Writer idea, there is an opportunity to create a sympathetic villain, to increase the impact the game has on the player.

It's not uncommon for artists to get attached to their works. However, the main villain in Yooka-Laylee could take it a bit too far.

The villain could have been one of the Writers that continuously write the books containing each world. The arrangement worked well for a good while, since the Writers took great care not to grow attached to the characters they create, and refrained from knowing each other as anything beyond acquaintances.

The main villain broke this trend, by using magic spells to visit her book's world. There, she saw the companionship between the characters she created, and decided that she had enough of the Writers' stoic demeanor.

And so, she wrote a character to be her child, and started raising him. Once the other Writers caught wind of this, they intervened immediately, telling the villain to cease this nonsense. She refused, and before the Writers could destroy her book, she killed them and cursed them all to wander their own books as ghosts.

Now, with no one to write the books, each world has stopped expanding. This is a disaster for the characters in the Ghost Writers' books, since their lifestyles have counted on the belief that there would be no end to resources like food, water, or energy. Now, with the Writers gone, there is no more expansion in the worlds to provide these things. Although acknowledgement of this disturbing news is terribly slow among the population, Yooka and Laylee are one of the first to realize the halt in expansion. Confronted with this worrying phenomenon, Yooka and Laylee set off to discover the cause behind this, and attempt to restore expansion in their world and the other worlds as well.

Of course, just as in Banjo Tooie, the darker themes presented in the plot would be balanced by humor and the cartoonish antics of the characters.

They've mentioned it's possible you could play as the villain in a different game in the Playtonic Universe, so a villain the player can sympathize with would be really useful to that cause. I wouldn't expect a nefarious villain like K Rool for example.

Plus there would be no way to prove that Playtonic did not independently think of any plot element on their own outside of the forum before an idea was ever typed here. Who is to say anything typed here wasn't already independently thought up by Playtonic?

Concerning the design of the main villain, does anyone else notice a resemblance between the current Yooka-Laylee art style and the art style of recent Donkey Kong Country games? I suspect that whatever villain we get would fit right in alongside the Tikis and the Snowmads.

I'm just hoping the villain doesn't rhyme. As fun as it was in Banjo, I think it's way too similar. But knowing that these people are the same who made Gruntilda, I trust they'll be thinking of something goofy and original for the new villian
