So, we have a new platformer coming up by a team known for its' intriguing way of teasing players with secrets.
Might as well get creative here and think up gameplay for hiding secrets.

If you were invited to think up the secrets in Yooka Laylee (without knowing anything about the story yet)
What would you think of? How would you implement it? how would you hide things?

I would throw in as many secret character animations as possible; a bit like Jamjars hitting his head on the way down after teaching a move, or selecting a file in Banjo-Kazooie.

I would also leave subtle clues to Playtonic's next game. Gobi in Banjo-Kazooie says he's going to the lava world, but there isn't a lava world in the game. He eventually appeared in the lava side of Hailfire Peaks -- a nice connection that makes sense in hindsight.

I'm not sure if it's possible for an indie studio to make an actual Stop 'N' Swop style connection, especially since Playtonic is releasing on multiple platforms. How would you organise it? It sounds like a challenge; you'd need to get Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony involved to get it to work on their consoles.

Stop & Swop could be a matter of just detecting that the game is installed on your system. Might that be limited to the default directory on your computer? Maybe.
Woaaaah, it finally came out! :o

This is all speculation, I've never built anything for PS4, Xbox One nor Wii U, but I'm assuming there's a way for a game to read information and saves from another game. Like, in Captain Toad on Wii U, if you have a Super Mario 3D World save, you unlock bonus levels.

Knowing that, I'm pretty sure they can even go further and check if, say, 'X' save in 'Y' game have 'Z' item, to unlock bonus content.

And if this is indeed possible for all consoles, but the way to execute it is different (it most probably is), I'm assuming there is a way with Unity to check on what console the game is running, and execute the correct code accordingly. I already know there is a way to check if the game is running on PC or on iOS/Android.

Just had to share this video:

http://youtu.be/wrjQ_yLT1-U

I once believed this video to be real somehow, it was made by the rarewitchproject back in the day. It was quite popular!

Anyway, the first clue appears to be "Snow joke" get it? "Snow joke"
It's on the kickstarter page. Plain coincidence of course... Or not

It's already starting XD

If another racing game ever came into play, Yooka & Laylee (or that Trowser snake fella or whatever)as bonus characters could be fun.

A great deal of the fun with Banjo-Kazooie was that you always felt like there was another secret to find around every corner--kept me up some nights, haha. I'm glad they're retaining a labyrinthian overworld for this reason. Hoping whatever they do involves special moves/transformations in conjunction with cross-level (or level-to-overworld) secret activations. Entire worlds were opened in Banjo-Kazooie that required the notice and completion of complicated puzzles in the overworld. One thing I didn't like too much in the original game were the sandcastle codes, they were very tedious and if you messed up you had to start over! I think Looka-Laylee can do without them.

In the world of DLC, is stop 'n swop even needed anymore?

Just had an idea...

Secrets are hard to hide in modern games because of data miners/hackers, but Playtonic intend to put lots of secrets in Yooka-Laylee.

What if Yooka-Laylee launched with 'free day one DLC' that contained a big secret, but to get the DLC you had to do something in-game to unlock it. Data miners wouldn't be able to find the DLC content as it'll only become available once certain criteria are met in the main game.

I guess it'll be like Banjo Kazooie XBLA when you hatch a Stop 'N' Swop egg and an avatar/theme becomes available to download, but the secrets in Yooka-Laylee will be more exciting.

To add to your idea: Store all the data for secrets to be found on playtonic's server. Requiring an internet-connection to be uncovered. That'll teach dataminers. Playtonic should use an own made encryption key for the data to be translated in game from their servers. It's a hassle, but the secrets will be safe :P

Heck, they could be dynamic. Weekly egg-hunts?

hahaha

For every fun suprise there's going to be someone who wants to spoil and ruin it, no matter what precautions that take.
