You could have a 'blob shadow' function but not an actual shadow. Something like when Yooka jumps, Laylee fires a beam of light to the floor to determine the landing point for the gamer.

It's a different approach to solve an old issue, but there will be criticism of whatever is implemented here. Like why would Laylee do that because they'd know where they're landing. It's solely a gameplay function to allow us to complete accurate jumping.

I think it's quite telling that the recent Mario games still use them though.

Which is funny because the one who started the definition nitpicking was you, by insisting a blob is only a circle. When you've probably not read a single book on developing platformers.

Let me state one more thing for arguments same, cause I believe Many get Confused with the terms "blob shadow" and "dynamic shadow"

"Blob Shadow" tells nothing of the shape of the shadow (although you're tempted to think so), it defines the location of the shadow, being directly under the source.
This makes it easier to pinpoint landing spots. (and for better depth perception)

"Dynamic shadow" is a realistic shadow where the shape is appropiate to the source and based on the location of the light source.

These 2 have nothing to do with one being more modern then the other.

Just read the first pages of the thread to get a better understanding of both terms and what kind of shadow suits best in a certain scenario.

Just a thought... can we just close this thread & move over to the original blob shadow discussion? It doesn't make much sense to keep two discussion about the exact same topic running. Both discussions will have the same course at the same time & people repeat themselves unnecessarily...

There's the thread "No blob shadows? 3D platforming needs them.": viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1045

(Taylor, would you mind clearing this up?)

[Jens Restemeier] We're going to have both. Argument solved! Blob helps with platforming and dynamic will kill the framerate.
