Movement Animations

Postby Savage Rodent » Fri May 22, 2015 11:11 pm

So after re-watching some gameplay footage of Yooka-Laylee, I noticed there is only one movement animation. I understand that the game is very early in development, but I do hope they give more movement animations, at least 3 anyways (tip-toeing, walking, running).

I'm not a big fan of games that use one running animation since moving slowly makes your character look like he/she is running in slow motion. I'm sure it isn't an issue and they would put in more movement animations, especially since I can't think of a game by Rareware that has one movement animation for your character, but I just wanted to know what others think about it.
Yooka-Laylee should be its own game with its own feeling. It shouldn't try to be like Banjo-Kazooie, it shouldn't try to be like Donkey Kong, it should be like Yooka-Laylee.

In both Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo-Kazooie there are three movement speeds: tip-toe, walking, and running. I expect to see the same for YL.

I'm sure they'll have it covered before the toy box is released. I also hope they manage to make it feel realistic. Tip-toe and walking animations have looked a bit awkward in some games (Majora's Mask at the top of my head).

Things like this don't even need discussing, they obviously will feature an appropriate animation for each traveling speed. Just like they did in EVERY other rare game...

I don't see the benefit of jumping on somebody who's found a feature that could use improvement, whether it will inevitably be addressed or not. Consumers taking notice reinforces the notion that we do notice and do care about these things to a developer who might, for whatever reason, decide to let it slide when push comes to shove. I don't doubt they'll fix it, but until then, it looks funky and now they know we noticed.

I noticed and became concerned about it the moment I saw the first gameplay footage. However, I am not going to worry too much about it until we get footage of a new build and we still do not see the varying movement animations. Given their history, I expect that there will be varying animations and they will all feel very nice.

The game won't be perfect. But it will be amazing.

I mean, they have more than enough time to fit in a walking and sneaking animation. I can only assume sneaking/creeping will be added because stealth is a part of the game.

It does sound like a mundane topic.
Just like the discussion about idle animations, which was followed by a prompt release of a gif showing 'em off.

So let's talk about movement animations and we might just see some this week.
