Reading other people's opinions on this, I've thought of 2 ways for handle lives.

With lives, every life you lose you get put back close to where you died, similar to Conker's Bad Fur Day. You also keep your secondary collecting (notes) progress for that world. Losing all lives sends you back to the beginning of the world and you lose all note progress.

Without lives, you always keep note progression, but you're always sent back to the beginning of the world.
Yooka-Laylee should be its own game with its own feeling. It shouldn't try to be like Banjo-Kazooie, it shouldn't try to be like Donkey Kong, it should be like Yooka-Laylee.

dependent on game size as well as a punishment factor because if its just return to title screen theres no real point as your just guna start the game again anyway

I personally don't like the idea of lives in games, mostly because it sends you back to the title screen and you have to go all the way back to the level you died on, and that is just annoying and basically just wastes time!

The game can't punish the player too much that the game stops being fun.

I'd prefer a option for both of them. Lives for some people willing to take a hit or two for their mistakes and no-lives for people just simply trying to complete the game as fast as possible without setbacks or interruptions. I'd play with like 1 life so that I can give myself a nice challenge. But when you lose lives you should be punished like losing all the notes or losing all the jiggies you just collected in that level. To me the loss of lives in Mario 64 wasn't that punishing and so was in Banjo Kazooie.

Another great thread. It goes to show how even a relatively simple question demands deep thought and either answer is justifiable, we just have to think which one is "more the right answer" than the other for the experience we know we're trying to achieve.

Thanks for making the threads such a joy to read everyone!

I'm definitely liking the discussion we're having here. It would be cool to have a setting for your experience. Maybe a retro mode with lives and secondary collectables (notes) being reset after death but with your record for that world saved. Then you can have millennium mode (get it? Because tooie came out in 2000...sorry) which has no lives and is meant for a much smoother adventuring experience with collectables staying collected.
