What could be "fun and challenging" for one player could be "hard and annoying" for another.

There NEEDS to be some kind of adjustment. Perhaps the game auto adjusts the difficulty based on how well you play.

Yooka-Laylee should be its own game with its own feeling. It shouldn't try to be like Banjo-Kazooie, it shouldn't try to be like Donkey Kong, it should be like Yooka-Laylee.

Lives are pointless nobody runs out of them unless they're really bad at the game. Might aswel have no lives. I'm currently playing through mario3dWorld and have about 119 lives, they are pointless.

Have more than one way or path to reach a goal. One path is harder, one is easier.
Let the player see what's in front of them, and let them choose how to tackle the situation.
