Project Ukulele: Game Over Cutscene

Postby Xellos » Thu Mar 19, 2015 2:29 pm

Who can remember these eerie words spoken by Gruntilda, as Tooty gets her beauty sucked out of her and pumped full of Grunty's ugliness because of your utter failure to save her? (unless of course you saved & quit and was greeted with this lovely cutscene) Definitely one of the most memorable moments in the game, and dare I say gaming history itself.

Very rarely do you see in video games what happens after you die in trying to save the world, a person, or something else important in that regard. It's almost always the case that you only get a still screen with the words game over on it, and that's it. But Rareware of old times did something more creative than that, they included game over cutscenes displaying the horrible fate of the main protagonists/world in almost all of their 3D platforming games on the Nintendo 64. They are: Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and last but not least Banjo-Kazooie (Banjo-Tooie sadly didn't have a game over cutscene, just a still screen).

Now what would be more fitting to add in Project Ukulele, a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, than a game over cutscene? (besides the obvious, you wanker!) It would only enhance the experience, so why the hell not I say! If you agree with me, then let your voices be heard and support this today!

That was fun to talk about, but now for you lot it's no doubt! .

I would love to get the game over cutscenes.

It instilled great panic in me as a kid because I voluntarily exitted the game and I thought I permanently lost. Got me to rush back into the game to make sure my save file was correct. Still had that nagging feeling that I'd be saving a monster tootie.
Woaaaah, it finally came out! :o

I was personally disappointed that there was no game over cutscene in tooie, but then again you had infinite lives. I wouldn't be against the idea of an game over cutscene in project ukulele.

I can already imagine, Pagies flying out of their books, a whirlwind of paper and chaotic music as lightning strikes in the background, the villain laughing maniacally as NPCs flee, maybe even the two heroes reaching out to one another one last time as the screen fades to black... GAME OVER indeed.

I'd love if there's no cutscene it all, but something playable. I hate non-game narrative. An underworld micro-level only accessible if you loose your lives? Better for me.

That'd be the implication, not giving up until their absolute last - though only an implication because it's still meant to be somewhat child-friendly, so it'd never outright state they're dying.

The cut scene shows a bunch of pages getting torn up.

No way to return home.......game over......

Hmm. With hindsight, one of the good things about Banjo-Kazooie's Game Over screen was that it implied you SURVIVE, having the chance to try again. Grunty says the game ends, and Tooty says she wants a word with you, the wording of both implying that you can always try again later. Despite my initial thoughts I do admit that the light-hearted nature of the old Game Over screen made you feel as though the game WASN'T over, and next time you'd kick Grunty were it hurts for even daring to kidnap Tooty. Maybe something gentler would work better?

It all depends on what the main villain will be like. Hopefully we will see him for the Kickstarter in May.

Releasing the Villain would give away some mechanics but not as many as seeing the main characters. You may be right, we might get lucky :)

I feel like we're going to learn QUITE a bit around when the Kickstarter releases.

Not knowing the main characters would significantly restrict donation potential.
Not knowing the villain would significantly restrict donation potential (people need motive for their collecting).
Not knowing at least some of the moves and mechanics would significantly restrict donation potential. People are less likely to donate to something if they don't have a basic understanding of how they can expect it to work.

Then again Frog Fractions 2 got funded on the basis of "you won't even know what the game is until people figure out what the game is."

It's just speculation of course but it all makes sense. Pretty excited for May!
