Questions regarding a port for the Nintendo 3DS

Postby John Enigma » Sun Mar 22, 2015 11:12 pm

We all know by now, that P. Ukulele is being developed in the Unity 5 (or 4) game engine, which is compatible for all video game consoles, except Nintendo 3DS appareantly.

But what about a port for the Nintendo 3DS?

There are still some rumours circulating that the Unity co. is creating a Nintendo 3DS build for developing games for that specific handheld console. But that's actually since 2014. Nothing else has been said ever since.

Seriously, isn't there an existing game engine specified for creating (3D) Nintendo 3DS games? Especially of the platformer likes?

I would love, LOVE, LOVE for Playtonic Games to make a nice port for the Nintendo 3DS. Just imagine it.

Personally I don't see this happening. The 3DS isn't as powerful as a home console, so even if it were possible to port it, it'd probably be really difficult to get the game working smoothly on the system.

Firstly, that game was originally made for the Wii, not the Wii U, so it's not as advanced as Ukulele could be.

Secondly, click the link above to read a discussion on the differences between the Wii and the 3DS version of DKC: Returns. The 3DS version had its graphics and frame rate watered-downed. Playtonic would need to do all this preparation, and potentially more (adding 3D elements etc.), before they could even consider porting it to the handheld.

Unfortunately I don't think it would be worth the time or money; I doubt they would profit from it.

Not likely to happen. And I hope it doesn't. DKCountry is a port from older-gen systems and even then it's not a 1:1 port. Putting the game on anything less than PS4/Xbone/WiiU will hold it back further than a console release already will (edit: and note that I am in favor of a current-gen console release). While also exponentially increasing the amount of work (need more assets, need all the assets to be 3D-compatible, etc).

DKCountry 3D Returns runs at 30FPS (half the original), the textures and models are all lower quality, they had to add additional loading screens, and some animations were ruined. Bad example of a port "working".

As long as this is on Wii U and I can play it on the gamepad, that'll take care of my handheld Ukulele needs just fine.

As a 3DS owner, as great as having a platformer besides 3D Land would be, I would have to pass on Playtonic porting PU to the 3DS. If they decided in the future to make a game exclusively for 3DS (which seems to go against their idea of trying to revive the platformer genre and bring it to as wide of a market as possible), then I'm sure that game would turn out just fine.
Woaaaah, it finally came out! :o

If they do make a 3DS exclusive game, I think it should be a 2D overhead adventure game like Conker's Pocket Tales or Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge. Or maybe give it 3D graphics like A Link Between Worlds while still having that classic overhead gameplay.

3DS can't handle this game unfortunately. MAYBE the "New" 3DS could.

Nope. If at all it'd be made for the 3DS' successor [which Japan will probably get next year]. But, imho, the 3D Platformer genre doesn't really 'fit' on a handheld.

People are jumping to conclusions that the Nintendo NX is a new game console, when all they said is it is "a platform". Steam as a platform too, android phones are a platform too. I'm personally thinking that it's a mobile phone.

System is still too vague. Evolution is a system. Steam is still a system. There's definitely a new console in the works because as soon as a console comes out there's already a new one in R&D, but the NX doesn't have enough backing to be a certain console yet. Your picture shows a unified distribution platform, not a console.
