How many levels or worlds...

Postby John Enigma » Mon Mar 23, 2015 9:37 pm

...would the game have in total? And also, how would be the organization of the worlds?

Usually in a complete 3D platformer game, there's like six to eight worlds (and in some rare cases, more than 10 worlds). The division of how these level/worlds would be, can sometimes be linear or on a single loop (check how the worlds are organized in Super Mario 3D Land or Yoshi Island), or non-linear and free to roam the places, like (check how the worlds are like in Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World, Banjo-Kazooie).

What I'm refering is this:

I. Linear/Single Loop

1. Super Mario 3D Land:
and

2. Yoshi Island:

II. Non-linear/Free-roaming

1. Super Mario World:

2. New Super Mario Bros. U:

3. Super Mario 3D World:
(Only World 1)

4. Banjo-Kazooie:
and

What do you guys say?

I'm really not sure what you're saying. In my opinion, New Super Mario Bros. etc. are very linear -- you complete the stages one after the other. You can sometimes warp to another world or take a different route, but you can't skip over a stage if you don't like it.

Ukulele will have a hub world like Banjo-Kazooie. I.e. a Grunty's Lair, or Isle O' Hags, equivalent. You'll be able to unlock whichever world you want, providing you have enough Pagies.

Today it was announced that players will be able to expand worlds by using more Pagies, or move straight on to new worlds and come back to expand the previous worlds later by using the Pagies they unlock in the later levels. Alternatively they could 'spend' their Pagies in a more linear fashion and do the levels one by one in order. Look at this thread for more: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=341

In terms of the number of levels; I'd like about eight to twelve.

I want as many worlds as they can finish before they run out of Kick starter funds. I don't want them to over promise a set number of levels and underdeliver, not putting enough time into each one.

Any comments about a particular number of levels is pure speculation as we haven't heard anything yet.

I think somewhere around 8-10 worlds would be perfect.
Woaaaah, it finally came out! :o

There's most likely going to be a planned set amount of levels done, I don't think it can be a "See how many we can get done" type thing. Maybe since it is a kickstarter funded (or at least partially funded) project. But chances are the amount of desired levels for this game specifically will be planned in the preproduction.

I think something like 8 is manageable and reasonable, as long as they're nice and relatively large and well done like I remember from Banjo Kazooie, Tooie and even Conker.

9 to 10 worlds is optimal. Maybe through kickstarter additional/optional worlds.

10 is a good round number to work with. For me it depends on how different they are and how large they can become through gameplay - I wouldn't want ten super-huge levels with four of them overlapping in style, for example. Neither would ten very small, completely random levels work eg. A Pond followed by a Shop followed by a Train. Completely random examples but you get the meaning. Happy middle grounds.

I would say 10 worlds, 1 small tutorial area (Spiral Mountain), 1 hub and 1 "finale world" (like Furnace of Fun or Cauldron Keep) would be optimal. This is enough for 10 pagies per world plus 20 extra pagies in the hub (One related to each world like Grunty Switches and maybe 10 secret pagies)

I think 8 or 9 worlds would be a reasonable amount.

12 huge ass worlds. Each having 10 golden Pagies, and 100 note-equivalents in them for a total of 120 golden Pagies, and 1200 note-equivalents in the game. Also, each world would have tons of secrets in it that would take you months, or even years to discover.

I would like to see 10 to 15 world but I think 12 is a really good number as was suggested above. Think it all depends on how much originality and freshness can be put into each world. If anybody can make a fantastic platform or with 15 level to be rare but I think that that just seems like an off a lot of work for one story arc. I think saving some of the extra material to make sure that the games for other characters is fresh and fantastic is paramount.

All glory to the kick starter.
