Community Made Assets

Postby TyranMcAllister » Sun Jun 21, 2015 2:58 am

Howdy,

Making a game is huge task, and Playtonic is a small team, so you probably see the problem. Do you think there is a possibility of playtonic using models, animations and other various assets that the community will send in, to prevent a longer than necessary dev time?

Perhaps Playtonic could give the community a couple of concept art sketches and we could go to town creating textures, models and animations to suit. Granted that they might not be exactly what their looking for, but at least Playtonic could tweak them to suit, or at the very least, use them as placeholders until they create something better.

It kinda seems like a missed opportunity that there is an avid community potentially willing to create royalty free assets and Playtonic end up burning the midnight oil instead. Just my two cents.

Cheers.

They mentioned at one point that for certain design challenges they would ask the community for feedback. I think it shouldn't go further then that.

I don't see a problem with this. If talented artists want to have a go themselves why not, playtonic ultimately decide what gets used and what doesn't so, why not...

If Playtonic creates its own assets, there will less chance of infringing on some obscure copyright or patent. While it would be cool to see some community-driven assets in game, it's pretty unlikely.

It's a nice idea, but I'd say wait until we have an established universe for Yooka-Laylee first since that'll help people understand what general content belongs in it.

I may write some Kirkhope-esque music and share it on here for fun, but as for the actual game, the community collaboration idea is IMO not a good one at all. Good games aren't created by committees. They want a small dev team all in the same room for a reason. And if you think they can't finish it themselves in time, well, we'll wait and see, but I have a feeling they may just prove you wrong!

No, not all Xbox owners are dudebros who love grey-and-brown PvP FPSes. Please feel free to quit stereotyping now.
