Should Playtonic only make platformering games?

Postby Wolfen » Thu Oct 08, 2015 6:22 am

Since it's been confirmed that some characters in Yooka-Laylee will eventually star in their own game, do you think these games should only be platformers like YL or should Playtonic have a mix different game genres similar to what Rare had during the 90's?

They've already said they're doing many genres.

As many said they won't, but I'd love to see more platforming games in the future than Yooka-Laylee... (Even if it's "only" a sequel to Y-L)

I would love to see their take on a Starfox Adventures style game. I'm pretty sure the reason that game got so much flak is the same reason N&B did: it wasn't what the fans of the IP wanted.

But honestly, Starfox Adventures was a Zelda game in all but name. Would've been nice to see what they could've done with it had they not had to shoehorn Fox characters in (and if it had been about twice as long, as far as number of dungeon-equivalents).

Maybe I just like Zelda-style games. And don't really care for kart racers.
No, not all Xbox owners are dudebros who love grey-and-brown PvP FPSes. Please feel free to quit stereotyping now.

Should they do more than one platformer? Yes

Should they JUST do platformers? No

Should they make a spiritual successor to Conker? No they are nothing to do with Conkers bad fur day.

Yooka Laylee games should always be 3d platformers but other characters from yooka laylee universe should star in their own games that are a different genre. Racers, 2d platformers, sandbox, rpgs, puzzle etc

They should, and they will, make whatever genres they feel like making.

Limiting yourself to a single genre can be, well, limiting. Playtonic said they will make games for which they ideas -- they won't try and milk the current hype around platformers if they have no genuinely decent ideas for a new one.

I imagine they will use up most of their best ideas on Yooka-Laylee and will need some time before they tackle a YL sequel or new platforming IP.

A kart racer would be awesome as it would easily feature all the cool characters we met in Yooka-Laylee.

I think Taylor puts it best.

Yes, we are all a bit starved for 3D platforming games. Yet, honestly, if Playtonic continues making the games they are passionate about, everybody wins!

In the interest of stimulating discussion which has ceased for the last week, I argue that Playtonic should only make 3D platforming (and collectathon) games for the next few years. To help revive a genre, one stellar title will not be enough to encourage developers to invest their own time in the genre which has seen little activity. If any other 3D platforming games come out as a result of Yooka-Laylee, it would simply be due to seeing the kickstarter success. Playtonic needs to demonstrate that people aren't looking for one great platformer every half or full decade, but many. Playtonic should demonstrate the popularity of 3D platformers by releasing second and third platformers - Yooka-Laylee may get them sufficient income to do effective wide-reaching advertising and not relying on word of mouth/keyboards, which can benefit their upcoming games.

Jumping to another genre after they've founded the company with a goal of reviving a genre seems to lack foresight at best.
Woaaaah, it finally came out! :o

I think it would be cool if they would do the same route like Nintendo with all their franchises or like the old Rareware. They should do all those genius genres again.
