Who is the mystery butterfly?

In these pieces of artwork:

What do they all have in common? That's right, there's a butterfly right next to Yooka and Laylee in all three images! Normally I'd disregard it as nothing major, but the fact that it appears in every piece of concept art in which you can clearly see Yooka and Laylee seems a bit too constant to be a mere Easter egg. So what are they? A replacement for Jinjos or Globos? A new major character? What do YOU think?

I hadn't noticed that. Fair play to you.

The images you linked to are cropped and shrunk from larger pieces Dean Wilson made, and if you look at the full pieces you'd notice that there are multiple butterflies near Yooka and Laylee in each of them.

First image: http://www.playtonicgames.com/files/201 ... -37-08.jpg
Second image: http://www.playtonicgames.com/files/2015/06/swamp.jpg

I honestly doubt those little butterflies are actually all that significant. If they appear in the actual game at all, I'd be surprised if they were more than potentially a health pick-up.

I'm sure there were butterflies in-game in the later demo footage we saw (when the trees turned pink).

They looked like simple background creatures, like the fish that swam in certain lakes in the Banjo games.

It wouldn't surprise me if butterflies were use for health, though. But that would probably draw criticism and comparisons to Spyro.

Hrm. Well they ARE suspiciously close to Yooka in each shot, and they come in 3's for seemingly no reason. How crazy would it be if they were secretly the game's enemy forces or something?

Can't help but think EarthBound and see them as energy-replenishes though.

Hmm... did the developers ever tell us if Laylee was an insectivore or not? Maybe she can eat those butterflies to obtain special abilities. Who knows...?
