My impression was that the token was just a throwback, referencing the placeholder, rather than being a representation of the current main collectible.

This is all assuming they did indeed confirm they were placeholders. I vaguely recall that they did, but its been a while.

Arcade machines in real life need tokens, though. Maybe the Playtonic Tokens still aren't the note equivalent/currency. It could be something like you trade your in-game currency for them, just like how at real arcades you have buy tokens to start playing, and then can subsequently earn them if you're good at the arcade games.

It's reasonable to guess that Play Tokens are specific to unlocking arcade machines, rather than being a note equivalent
