Regenerating health vs Collectable health

Postby soulstorm64 » Thu Jan 07, 2016 12:46 am

Hello everyone, in the days where games go more towards regenerating health I think it would be a good idea to keep the health system to the days of collecting certain items to fill the Meter when it is drained. How do any of you feel about this?

I wouldn't worry about this. Regenerating health is more for shooters. Yooka-Laylee will have collectable health to refill. But what could that collectable health item be? Hmmmm.

I suspect health will be collectable.

How about honey bees?
You can clearly see why I see similarities there.

Maybe some kind of fruit or they could make the characters love a certain food and that will be the item like Conker's chocolates!

Thinking about it Banjo was very selfish only searching for the food he likes (honey) and not spending any time searching for food Kazooie might like (worms, seeds, berries etc)

Maybe Yooka will be a bit more selfless and collect something they can both share. Like bugs.

Definitely collectable health. And I would also like enemies and traps to do a lot more variety in damage as well. BT did more of this than BK, and I'd like to see more of it.

Also, every enemy should drop at least one piece of health. I wasn't a fan of BT's random health stuff, both not getting a health drop and getting a "?" or "!" honeycomb. If my health is low and I went through the risk of attacking an enemy, I should get a health drop. I would even be fine with health pick ups only dropping if the enemy is defeated from a melee attack.
Yooka-Laylee should be its own game with its own feeling. It shouldn't try to be like Banjo-Kazooie, it shouldn't try to be like Donkey Kong, it should be like Yooka-Laylee.

How many platformers have regenerating health?

AH! As savage rodent has mentioned it.

Playtonic if your reading this, please no "random health" pickups that pause gameplay. It gets rather tedious in Tooie picking up a ? Or ! Honeycomb for you to have to stop in your tracks to wait gor it to land where you want it. I didn't like this.

^ I don't think swimming will replenish health. Just look at BK and BT. SM64 was one of the first 3D platformers, so it's understandable that the exploit made it into the game.

I wasn't a fan of the replenishing health in N&B. I think collecting health is better for a platformer -- I'd get annoyed if I sat for ages to replenish my health just to fall off a ledge and die straight after.

BT had regenerating health if you used a legit in-game cheat. :)

The collectable health item in Yooka-Laylee doesn't necessarily need to be insects for Yooka to consume only because he's a chameleon which primarily eats them in real life. Banjo in B-K had an appropriate health item for him to pick up in the form of a honeycomb, which real bears do consume by tearing beehives apart to get to the honey inside. While Conker in CBFD didn't have any nuts for him to collect in order to restore his health, rather he ate chocolate bars which is pretty far away from the diet of a real squirrel... To put it mildly. Now, chameleons in captivity can eat other food like fruit just fine (granted, only if you're wary of a few things like don't feed it citric fruit, the seeds/cores, etc). So, rather than going with the straightforward idea that Yooka needs to eat insects to recover lost health, I propose a different idea in that he needs to pick up fruit instead. Also, for some people there may ring a bell upon reading this suggestion of mine. Well, that's because it has a slight similarity with scrapped idea from Banjo-Kazooie. Only the main difference in Gregg's version is that the fruits were going to reward you with a jiggy after you had collected enough of them, and paid a visit in one of the 5 different "fruit houses" - instead of just function as a basic health item.
