For those not following Grant Kirkhope, one of Yooka-Laylee's musicians, he posted this video onto Facebook an hour ago. Very short, but sounds awesome as always.
I am fine and all with that but I hope you are trying to give Yooka Laylee it's own personality too. I know it's too early to tell since we've basically heard nothing yet but there needs to be a balance between familiarity and something fresh. Based on these few seconds it sounds like it's straight out of BK/BT. Maybe a bit less Marimba and more sexy Sax?
Grants songs are always really cool in how they build, progress and change. This clip feels strange because it has a sense of moving/transitioning. It starts with that chord, clearly ending a different section, and then feels like it's moving someplace else
It's a cool sound, a lovely clip, but will need to hear more to understand where he's going with it.
Grants composed so much since BK/BT. He continually proves himself to be skilled at what he does. I have no doubt YL will be its own thing ... Grant wouldn't just rehash. Listen to the different arrangements of Jungle World -- such fun! But I have to agree with anyone asking for more sax!
I love Grant's music being in a similar style to the Banjo games. It ties the worlds together and makes it feel like a true spritual successor. I love the Banjo soundtrack, so I hope Grant continues to compose Banjo-esque pieces for Yooka-Laylee. David Wise and the other musicians can deliver more than enough music variety in minigames etc.
