Shovel Knight in Yooka-Laylee

Postby EekumBokum202 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 5:51 pm

HOLY CRAP! ...I did NOT see this coming.

Edit: So many questions I have regarding this reveal... What's Shovel Knight going to do in Yooka-Laylee? How will he help our heroes? Is that his canon voice for his respective Yacht Club Games persona now? Will the Shovel Knight amiibo be involved on the Wii U version? Is this the only guest character? Either way, excitement abounds with this reveal!

Some new info on Shovel knight

Postby Operationgamer17 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 5:52 pm

-Sean Velasco voices the character
-Yacht Club Games made the model, Playtonic rigged and animated it.

They neglect to mention how much they paid Playtonic or Team 17, or how it exactly was that Shovel Knight was shoehorned into yet another game. I was thinking Playtonic got enough kickstarter funding, so I assume Yacht Games attacked through Team 17, as Playtonic wouldn't want to have to find a new publisher.

I'm sure if subsequent games are self published or away from Team 17, that would suggest Team 17 was the vulnerable party.

Interesting. I think this is a pretty cool and funny cameo, but I really hope it's just that - a small reference and nothing more. I really like the idea of all the characters in the Playtonic universe being original, but I think it's really funny how Shovel Knight "embarked on an adventure and ended up in the wrong game." It's kind of like Saberwolf in Banjo-Tooie.

Shovel Knight is an obvious choice because he's in a dozen and a half games, despite starring in only one.

I can understand working with other indies and selling or lending your IP if you needed funding or some way to draw attention to your game. But Yooka Laylee - Playtonic - didn't need that. Period.

All in all, this just makes me want to abstain from playing anything by Yacht Club Games. I'll boycott them. I won't support their immersion-breaking advertising.

I've said it elsewhere but I really, really hate this.

Some copy pasta as this topic seems more relevant for it and seems to stir things somewhat.

"

The role is most probably just minor anyway. Then again it IS a bit strange that they include him anywhere. Just saw that he will appear in Bloodstained as well. I mean. That's Castlevania's reboot. A gothic themed dark game.

Somehow to me it appears to me that they are attempting to force this Shovel Knight character as being some mascot for the whole indie scene. Basically like a seal. A seal that if Shovel Knight is in your game you are an succesful indie game.

So while I won't be bothered by his inclusion in YL (I think he'll appear in the first world where 4th wall breaking will occur together with a thorough tutorial for the platforming genre for all new players coming back)
I am somewhat puzzled and finding this somewhat awkward as a whole.

Why is this?

Cameos always feel a little weird maybe. Agreed on that -- open to it in moderation. It would feel a bit like Smash Bros Brawl of Shovel Knight had too much of a role in the plot. But he won't I'm sure!

Thing is, having played Shovel Knight I find him completely deserving.

Also, lets not get too cynical on Yacht Club. Shovel Knight came out about 2 years ago and most of what they've been working on since is free content for fans. The Plague of Shadows update was a whole new campaign somehow better than the original game and free to all (backer or no.) The work they do feels so pristine! A fantastic developer.

Edit: They even did a Battletoads cameo for the 360 release ... it was such a thoughtful homage with a tunnel section, remixed David Wise and all!

I have no idea what shovel knight is and I have no idea why it's in Yooka-Laylee.

Didn't we get this out of place feeling with Dr. Puzz as well in the beginning? Like she was "too human"? Meh, we'll get used to it.

I was actually hoping they put me in after I sent them my pictures and all... Alas

Game will still be better than Mighty No.9 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let's not let Shovel Knight's inclusion tear us apart. :D

btw, this needs merging with the EGX surprise thread. thx

"... I've ended up in the wrong game."

Seems Shovel Knight himself agrees with the people complaining here. I currently have mixed feelings, though mostly that if I wanted a game with Shovel Knight in it I would buy the game named after him. However, the devs seem happy about it, so I'll wait and see how it turns out.
