Anyone else notice the inexplicable lack of Googly eyes?

Postby Krvavi Abadas » Sat Mar 14, 2015 8:27 pm

Seriously look at the recent screenshots.

Where's the Googly eyes? If this was a (old) Rare game, you'd be seeing them on the plants in the first screenshot, and on the mushrooms in the second screenshot, and yet they only put them on the protagonists.

Come on Playtonic, this is a huge issue that needs to be fixed.

The Googly Eyes were always more of a character thing. The environments were mostly eyeless.

The whole "Googly Eyes on literally everything" was always an exaggeration done as either satire or to insult Rare's design. It's a staple of the character design, nothing more. Bad Fur Day made fun of the criticism by really pushing the Googly Eyes, but even then, it was a character thing.

Mhm... googly eyes in the environment would be a bit ridiculous. Keep the eyes on characters, I say.

Seriously though, I'm with Krockhead and Taylor. Characters should have them, but not random objects around the environments. Unless those objects are characters.

Haha, those eyes don't actually look half bad! I stand corrected... somewhat.

If I recall correctly, the only time something (be it an inanimate object or living thing) received googly eyes is if you interacted with it in some way, either through speaking to it or attacking it. The environments generally didn't have googly eyes, as was mentioned previously.

That being said, I think it was hilarious how a chunk of ice talked to you in Banjo-Kazooie when you fell into the cold water... Like, wow. A cup of water formed into ice just to tell me off. Charming.

Poor George Ice Cube. Brazenly murdering him and then shattering his wife was possibly the darkest thing in Banjo-Tooie... and this is a game that obliterated one of its central characters in the first 10 minutes.

Love it. ALL OF IT.

Same here. It's that kind of humor that served to make Banjo that much more memorable in our minds. Character is sorely underrated in platform games.

The ice cube murder is the right combination of humour and discomfort that this game needs.

Patience, my friend. I'm sure the googly eyes will show themselves in time.

Yeah, eyes on literally everything including the clouds and sun are a Mario staple, not something Rare did. They'd have magically alive inanimate objects, sure (the haystacks in Diddy Kong Racing as one of the earliest examples), but there was always some magic practitioner like a Taj, Mumbo or Gruntilda nearby to explain it.

Daily Reminder: Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts has googley eyes as a vehicle part in the Stop n' Swop feature.

Googly eyes are really just eyes that move around randomly. It doesn't refer to the size at all.

What you want are characters with big eyes.
