(Neogaf) Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

Postby Yavga » Thu Mar 30, 2017 7:54 am

Harlequin from NeoGaf:

I just listened to the new Podquisition episode and in it, Jim Sterling and Laura Kate Dale are warning people who've pre-ordered Yooka-Laylee :/.

They've apparently gotten review copies so they can't really talk about it until the embargo goes up but Jim said "if you pre-ordered it, think twice" (at around 32:30) and they both made some very unimpressed, ominous-sounding noises to describe their feelings on it. Later, Jim says "If you've looked at trailers and ever thought it looked a bit choppy" and then, shortly thereafter, "Yeah, yeah, a bit is not quite it." (Starting around the 41 minute mark.) I assume that refers to the game's performance being bad, though they make it sound like that may not be its only problem.

The podcast description also says: "Oh, and some… “preview” words of warning regarding Yooka-Laylee."

Yavga's own thoughts

I have to say if I scroll through the thread further many people who also already played the game seem to not understand Jim his stance in all this. Jim is the person who gave Breath of the Wild a score of 7 (not bad) but his supposedly nitpicking critique got many people angry.

I think he's doing great garnering attention, that aside. Please do not let your experience be influenced by the pre-opinion of others.

I don't disagree with his Zelda review, he might be right with Yooka, but it is bad form to make such a video before the embargo lifts, because it sends a strong message that cannot be opposed by people who do not share the sentiment and the embargo is far enough away from launch that this cannot be seen as a helpful action either.

Banjo-Tooie was at 10 frames or so, I think I will be able to cope (though I would prefer weaker graphics and better framerates), the important thing is level design. But that's another thing with this humming response: You don't even know for sure what they think is bad about the game.

I sorta expected some divisiveness since the kickstarter, since people tend to look back on the genre with maybe not as much fondness as the people on this board have.

Also was pretty worried about console performance, switched from PS4 to Steam because of it, but still kinda a bummer. The Gamexplain thing specifically mentioned the Xbox version having issues, curious if maybe if the PS4 does a bit better. I only wonder because we've seen footage of the PS4 version, and though it probably was still an in progress thing I didn't notice any huge performance issues there.

I have no idea who they are or why their opinion matters?

I think it's unfair that, when Googling Yooka-Laylee, the first article is: "".

It seems very misleading to me. Sterling and Dale are the only previewers I've heard talk negatively, and they both came under the same podcast. Everybody else gives off mostly positive vibes when discussing their experience with the game. It confirms to me, without much surprise, that the general media are after controversial stories rather than an accurate portrayal of the situation.
