Playtonic Games announces Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

This game looks more like an expansion pack than a fully-fledged sequel to Y-L, but I'll take it if this is what we get from the DLC stretch goal we paid for or a discount on the game.

Wow, so I was right when I guessed it is a 2(,5)D platforming game like DKC! The 2D Zelda-esque overworld is awesome too!

It's still a spiritual successor to BK, but now with a DKC kind of view, which is lovely!

Friggin' awesome!! :D

Don't wanna complain, the game looks good, but I was immediately asking myself about their DLC plans for the og game.

Oh it looks good, even though it's not a 3D platformer. Looks like there's a "Queen Bee" character:

Also I don't want to get too hyped in case we're disappointed again, but I had the thought that maybe Playtonic went 2D with this one, so as not to have to compete with a certain 3D platformer that everyone is hoping will finally be announced at E3 this year? :o

I think the only thing I'd want different about this game is for it to implement the buddy mechanic from DKC. You know, like, have Laylee follow behind Yooka, and make it so the two can swap places with the press of a button.

This looks great, I am looking forward to it. I would have prefered a Yooka-Tooie, but it's better if the great team at Playtonic does not overdo it in a way that the team loses the passion to make collectathon games.

Is this supposed to be a sequel or a prequel to Yooka-Laylee? I'm eager to find out :D

I think this is a brilliant move - a 2D platformer to play on their DK Country-honed strengths and show that they're not just a 3D collectathon studio.

Hope it takes off.

YESS!!! :!:
I wanted a 2D plattformer from Playtonic since day one but it still took me by surprise!
Looks like a relaxing playformer, that should be interesting.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that it is both a 2D platformer AND a Yooka Laylee game. An excellent combination, in my opinion. It's also good to hear that this will not be considered to be taking the spot of a direct sequel to Yooka Laylee, so that there is still room for a 2nd 3D platformer starring the duo in the future.

This was unexpected, it looks like great fun! I'm actually a little relieved that it's not another 3D collectathon, I think Playtonic REALLY need to regroup on that concept and make sure the sequel to that concept improves on the original's mistakes/failures. Besides, they themselves said they weren't going to limit themselves to a single genre; I'm just curious how this is going to compare to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, since this feels like Donkey Kong Country where the first game was to Banjo-Kazooie.
ATTENTION PLAYTONIC!

I was pleasantly surprised by this announcement!

This looks like a fun side story to Yooka-Laylee. This seems to be the DKC version of "Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's revenge" in that it takes place after the first game but before the second. I vaguely remember the team at playtonic tweeting that they were doing some research or homework, and tweeting a photo of them playing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze back in 2014/2015. At the time I thought it was for the first Yooka-Laylee which was still in development at the time. Now I think they were looking into doing a 2D game all that time, though whether or not it was originally meant to star this particular duo, or if they changed it is up in the air.

There is still a part of me that secretly want them to do another DKC for nintendo while Retro Studios works on other things! *cough*metroidprime4*cough*

Andy Robinson posted a blog article about the game on the VGC website that he works at now. Here's the link for those who haven't seen it elsewhere such as on twitter. https://www.videogameschronicle.com/blo ... worked-on/

While there aren't a whole lot of details about the game, he does mention roughly how long it's been in development and a few details about his role in working on it.
