Character design?

Postby lavamario » Sun Mar 15, 2015 3:09 am

Anyone else not digging a few bits of whats been revealed? Take a look at the edge article:

Stylistically, the design on the silhouettes look like they're coming from the usual saturday cartoon (although they're just silhouettes for now so I'll reserve some judgement). The monsters, however, look like those awful generic skylander things. I prefer the simple approach of hooded goblins and sentient carrots with googly eyes.

Those look like enemy characters.

Similar to these guys.

You've a point there. Generic monsters are always gonna be a thing.
I think it's just the eyes that have me favoring that one a lot more.

They'll probably look better modeled ingame.

I prefer killing ugly monsters over cute animals any day.

Unrelated, but I love the Zelda desktop they have in one of the photos in the article. I always knew I liked these guys.

I thought the monster characters were cute. I'm looking forward to the silhouettes being revealed. I see a rat, a lion(?), a rhino, and... something.

The top silhouette appears to be some kind of pointy eared creature with its head turned in such a way that one ear is closer to the screen than the other. Is it a cat, maybe?

Whatever the character designs are, it is interesting that by just looking at them we will know what their special moves and abilities will be, otherwise they would have shown them too us! I hope it's not too over the top though, and that you could maybe guess, kind of like what type a pokemon could be.

I'm also interested to see what they will be named, It would be cool to carry on the instrument names, and the different combinations of characters would make the music change.

Example: Ukelele-Marimba
Animation and Computer Science Major at Ball State University

I'm not entirely sold on the main character designs for yooka and laylee. I think they still need some refinement

One minor suggestion would be those protrusions from the back of yooka's head (I assume the larger character is yooka)could be slightly longer, so when he moves, they move around too, abit like hair. Tt adds to the sense of motion. His head might also benefit from being abit longer

Either way, the designs do need a little more work yet

Yooka looks great, no problems with him (maybe he could wear a shirt/jacket/some type of necklace, like the sharktooth one Banjo wears, maybe?)...

Laylee on the other hand... I dunno. The thing that's really distracting me is her nose... Like, I feel like it's too big. Maybe I just need to get to know her personality a bit more, to see if her overall design fits her, but for now, I'm still iffy on the whole thing.

that's great, except the actual character design doesn't follow the reality of that photo - in the design, the protrusions are sticking out of the back of the head (I assume this larger character is actually the chameleon), so given the developer's artistic licence with reality, the protrusions could be abit longer and sway abit when the character moves

but my suggestion isn't really important - the main point is I think the main character design still needs a little more work :)

ps - I agree about the nose. Properly distracting. Takes away any nuance from the face.

Who'd thought some fat plumber guy in his mid 40s would become a mascot? It's the games that make the mascot, not the character's looks.

Totally agree with Jellyfunk. Personally, I hope we get a few more enemies leaked. We've seen Keith and Big Keith, and then the big orange guy. I hope there are like, ten more enemy varieties at least. And I'd like to see another one
