Kameo - Elements of Power

Postby Dracul JOSHI » Sat May 02, 2015 5:38 pm

I liked that game... a lot.

In fact, it was the game that convinced me to buy a XBox 360 after playing it at a friend's house.

I didn't even realize it was a RARE WARE game until yesterday when somebody mentioned it in the forum.

It's been so long since I played it though... I really need to play it again.

Kameo wasn't half-bad. It was a transitional game - half past-gen, half next-gen - but gameplay-wise it was at the very least decent. :) It dated badly WRT graphics but other than that it's still playable.

I rank it in the top 10 games ever.

It was a pretty solid game, and the combat was a nice improvement over Zelda, but the puzzles were very disappointing.

I love Kameo. I hope we see her again.

I bought the Xbox 360 for at launch for this (knew it was from rare). I had been following it for a while. It was even on the back of the GameCube box (along with donkey kong racing).

If you hunt around for old media on it, you should also find a little purple dragon. For such a long time Kameo had this dragon sidekick called meepo. Rare decided to get rid of him though before the final game. I still wonder what it would have been like if he was in it.

I don't know if this is the case, but it could be because they had to start from scratch so many times while making this game. First Gamcube, then Xbox, then Xbox 360. They could have just run out of time to implement it. I know they were also going to implement wind-based creatures and puzzles, but they had to cut that to make the Xbox 360 launch.

It could also be that Microsoft wanted them to tread in a different direction, though I'm not convinced that was the case so soon after the acquisition.

Other than that, beats me. Maybe Thorn squashed them all in the opening sequence.

Another one I might need to pick up on eBay. Never played it.

I absolutely loved Kameo: Elements of Power. I bought an Xbox 360 at launch to play Kameo and . ( :( ) I took my time with Kameo to explore every inch of it. What a beautiful game. Another guy and I played through all the multiplayer levels together to get the high scores. Then the leaderboards were mysteriously wiped, so we did it all over again. :D

I've been meaning to get back to Kameo and play through it all again, but I haven't had the chance. With the 10-year anniversary this year (already), maybe it's about time.

I finally picked this one up for £4 last weekend - it's all right.

Very short and lacks polish in some areas but still worth playing once.

The GCN version looked promising as well:

It was on of my first 360 games. While nothing amazing, I did find it to be a solid and enjoyable game.

Yup. Very good launch title for the 360. Great game just way too short.

Thinking about playing this game, myself. Got Rare Replay, and recently finished Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, so I've been considering which game to play next. Kameo looks interesting, so it may end up being the next game I play in the collection. Honestly, I never even knew Kameo existed until I got Rare Replay, as the Xbox One is my first Xbox console, never got the original or the 360.

Kameo: Elements of Power is a really average game that suffered heavily of its transition from being first developed for the Gamecube, then the original Xbox when Rareware was bought by Microsoft, and finally released as a launch title on the Xbox 360. The game was rushed to get it out on time for the launch of the Xbox 360, and many things like levels/characters were cut or changed like Kameo being an elf (with fairy-wings) instead of being a fairy. Because the general demographic of Xbox wouldn't like playing as a fairy as Microsoft thought of the matter (described by a former ex-Rare developer of the game in an interview).

The old Gamecube footage of Kameo: Elements of Power looked way more promising than what we got in the end. Perhaps a spiritual successor of Kameo would be a great concept to revisit for Playtonic, but done right this time.

I first played it on Rare Replay, and let me tell you, it's fantastic! Think Star Fox Adventures done right (note SFA is still a good game). Play it now, you will thank me.

And also, why can't Rare just do Kameo 2 @Xellos? They've got at least three teams now, Sea of Thieves team, Rare Replay team (which will probably move onto another game), and a team developing an unamed project (probably Banjo as it started development right after YL's kickstarter ended, and development time usually takes two to three years so it would come out in time for the 20th anniversary), and there might be more. Also, Playtonic is such a small team, and right now they've got their hands full.
