Your Favorite Rare Games

Postby Kippran » Sat Mar 14, 2015 4:59 pm

This isn't strictly related to Ukulele, but the men behind these projects have made some of the most influential games in many of our lives. If any of them is monitoring this board, I just want them to see how many people they've impacted and in what ways.

So let's hear it! What have been your favorite Rare games? What aspects of them did you like and would love to see return for Project Ukulele. What aspects of them would you maybe like to see left by the wayside (because even the best games have undesirable bits)?

My absolute favorite Rare game is no big surprise. More than anything, I love Banjo Kazooie. It's what first introduced me to the 3D platformer alongside Super Mario 64. I loved Kirkhope's integration of music into the level. When you went underwater or did other things, the music would change to fit the mood and the new setting. This created an immersion that I haven't felt in too many games since.

Hmmm, it's hard to say. I would say there's some charming games that I loved from them even if they were heavily flawed. Like Jet Force Gemini the Floyyd sections were kinda bad, but I liked the game anyway. I would love to see another one without the mandatory Tribal collect to complete the game.

I think a lot of people will say Banjo-kazooie and I'm no different :p Banjo-kazooie is my favourite game of all time. Apart from BK, DKR and Jet Force Gemini were also great. Not played JFG in a long time though.

Hands down, Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie. For me, it's hard to put them in an order, they each are unique and do things better than the other. They have both inspired me since I was very young and they themselves are the sole reason why I'm into games today. Conker's Bad Fur Day would be 2nd for me, although I didn't play it as a young kid, it felt familiar to me when I discovered it years later. Rare games will always be where my bestest memories originate from.

Definitely the Banjo Kazooie games.

I just LOVE the colorful, fun worlds, the cartoony characters, the humor, the music, everything about them!

I'd say Banjo-Kazooie is easier to pick up and play, but Banjo Tooie is my favorite. The worlds are bigger, the humor snappier, so many more characters... But BOTH are just wonderful.

Also love the DKC games, Conker, Viva Pinata, and Grabbed by the Ghoulies is CRIMINALLY underrated.

I'm actually not a huge fan of Jet Force Gemini, myself. I liked some cool things about it, but I dunno, the controls are a bit too wonky to make me wanna replay through all the planets to get the ship parts and Tribals. Music and designs are cool, though!

My top 10:

1. Donkey Kong Country 2
2. Banjo-Kazooie
3. Perfect Dark
4. Goldeneye
5. Donkey Kong Country
6. Kameo
7. Donkey Kong Country 3
8. Banjo-Tooie
9. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
10. Donkey Kong 64

Wouldn't have made the list anyway: Perfect Dark Zero

I plan to play Viva Pinata TiP soon. Maybe it will knock DK64 off the list.

Donkey Kong Country 1-3 are my all-time favourites, but I also adore Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Viva Piñata, and Nuts & Bolts. I love pretty much everything but these games stand out the most.

BK and Grabbed by the Ghoulies. Honestly! I can't think of a game that has had a more unfair reception. It was a perfect example of everything I loved about RARE's games. It looked fantastic, the music was superb, game play was simple but challenging and it had so much atmosphere.

The humour throughout the game was great and I still remember the day I spotted the jar of "Seaman's stain" on the shelf.

It's so hard to put them in a specific order, as which one I like more is always changing. The one constant is DKC2's spot at the top. Here I go, in a somewhat particular order.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest
Banjo-Kazooie
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Diddy Kong Racing
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Perfect Dark
Jet Force Gemini
Donkey Kong Country
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
GoldenEye 007

Sabre Wulf is underrated too. Really wish Sabreman Stampede had worked out.

In no particular order:

-Banjo Kazooie <- All-time favourite.
-Donkey Kong 64
-Jet Force Gemini
-Conker's bad fur day
-Banjo Tooie
-Diddy Kong Racing.

I guess it has to do with me being not born yet when the Donkey Country games came out so I've never played those, however I have them on a Wii and playing them (I'm currently on the first one) and so far I've liked it too much.
(Probably the same reason why I haven't played Killer Instinct and others.

I also recently bought Kameo so I have yet to play it and see what it's like, but I tried the demo and it was so good!.

My favourite is Donkey Kong Country. I played this game for many years, since I was 2-3 years old. Because of my country, in which there wasn't any distribution of Nintendo consoles and games I found out later on other Rare's games. My list of favorite games will increase. I have to just catch up.

5. Perfect Dark
4. Diddy's Kong Quest
3. Conker's Bad Fur Day
2. Banjo-Kazooie
1. Banjo-Tooie

Honorable mentions go to Jetpac, Saberwulf, Goldeneye007, and Grunty's Revenge (I feel like people give this last one too much crap).
