https://www.facebook.com/playtonicgames ... =1&theater -- Playtonic have mentioned Jet Force Gemini on Facebook, so they clearly like the game. (Or Startwins, apparently?)...

To be entirely honest, I've not played JFG in recent years. By that I mean I played it a couple of times when I was about five. I loved the atmosphere and creatures, and I occasionally listen to the soundtrack, but I don't remember much about game-play except for shooting ants and collecting teddies.

Perfect Dark is such an amazing game in my opinion; I don't think its success is just down to the limited amount of FPS games on the N64. The story, atmosphere and game-play is great.

I see what you mean about being similar to JFG, given what you say about Halo and Metroid Prime. And after thinking about it I don't think that you'll find Serious Sam similar to JFG either in this case. Serious Sam is pretty linear, there is no hub and the exploration only goes as far as finding secrets in a given area before moving to the next one. So when comparing this to JFG yeah it's pretty different. What it does well is to include platforming elements, and by that I don't mean exploration related stuff (even though there are secrets) but jumping challenges (which JFG didn't even have actually). The shooting itself is also different, in Serious Sam you need to learn the behavior of enemies and play with them, run around them, exploit their weaknesses, it's much more tight and focused than JFG.

So it's actually different enough to not warrant a comparison with JFG.

If someday you want to play the Serious Sam games and want to try to find all the secrets in coop, let me know. :D I still didn't find them all myself.

According to the "Previously" section of Playtonic's site, some of the team worked on Perfect Dark Zero and no other shooter. Not sure if they'd want to start another one unless they had a bit more experience with it?

I'd like to see the team give an FPS a try, but maybe a few years down the road when they have a good foundation of other games first.

Hmm, maybe. But first I want to see two 3D collectathon platformer games from Playtonic, before I want to see them making a FPS which we already have hundreds upon hundreds of.

FPS games are extremely prominent nowadays, so I'm way more interested in seeing platformers for now.

I've never liked the first person view in video games. If Playtonic does end up making a shooter I hope it's a third person shooter like Jet Force Gemini (in which case I would absolutely love it).

Also if they were to make a spiritual successor to JFG, I'd want it to be part of Ukulele's universe and thus have a similar kind of cartoonishness to it.

Thinking about it, I'm wondering how they'd come up with a new FPS with their own distinct mark on it:

To make it distinct from Perfect Dark (to which it would likely be compared from the off), Playtonic would likely not have a nubile young lass in the mould of Joanna Dark as the star.

Maybe someone completely unexpected for an FPS, like an elderly person?

God, no. God, please no...
There is already enough FPS garbage on the gaming market.

Stick to 2D/3D Platformer, Adventure and mayyybeee Racing games (not too many Racer games please).

Playtonic is unique and wants to stay unique.
You know what isn't unique?
Indeed, FPSs.

I like the ones you were listing, polomi. Half-Life 2 was a revolution, diverse and SO unique, Natural Selection 2 is the definite version of this unique type of asymmetric shooter / strategy mix & Serious Sam is just a parody of all the shooters that take themselves too seriously and therefore trashy in the best way. I'd name Bioshock Infinite as well, since it has some awesome storytelling, visuals and atmosphere.

If Playtonic decide to make a shooter, it's got to be a very unique one. I didn't play Perfect Dark or GoldenEye 007, but from the look of it, I'm not so certain whether these games would stand out nowadays. But maybe someone can explain to me what made these games so great in their times (except of being the first great shooters on a home console). :) Anyways, it's possible to turn & twist the shooter genre nowadays - just look at Splatoon.

I think for the purpose of this thread it's important to remember that nobody who worked on GoldenEye or Perfect Dark are actually at Playtonic. Rare had lots of different teams.
