After nearly 15 years as a division of Microsoft, Rare is almost unrecognisable from its days as a Nintendo partner.
The company has been through some great ordeals since 2002; some of the most salient are the terrible flops of Ghoulies, Conker L&R and Kinect Sports Rivals, the mass exodus of the staff from its golden age and chronic mismanagement from Microsoft.
Following Microsoft's recent announcement that its PC and Xbox divisions will be merged and Universal Windows Applications will be Microsoft's priority in gaming from now on, I suspect that Sea of Thieves is Rare's very last throw of the dice.
They're directing all resources straight at Sea of Thieves and are going out of their way to build it up - even billing it "The Best Game That Rare Has Ever Made".
If this game flops, Rare could go the way of Lionhead.
