A new 3D platformer kickstarter: FreezeME

Postby Alph » Fri Mar 27, 2015 5:12 pm

Looks like the Kickstarter for this has started up. If you haven't heard about it, it's an indie 3D platformer with a bit of a Mario Galaxy feel to it except with larger environments and freezing gimmick. Also it'll be on Wii U, which is something A Hat in Time was never able to guarantee (why is that, I wonder?)

I can't decide if I like it or despise it.

On one hand:

* It's cute.
* It's a 3D platformer collectathon.
* The freezing mechanic is interesting.

On the other:

* It's extremely derivative. Large portions are ripped directly from Super Mario Galaxy. Like if SMG had a world-builder, this is what I would expect on the "download free levels" shop. I feel like these "indie" platformers are just stealing what they can and hoping coat-tail rides and nostalgia get them there.
* It's amateurish. Needs significant polishing and the controls seem fairly loose.
* The worlds demonstrated seem very messy. Like floating assets were just thrown in without consideration for overall aesthetic.

I guess I just lose a bit of interest when you gather a golden FEZ cube on a Mario Galaxy planet and do Mario's signature peace sign (1:33), or when you're diving off Mario Sunshine's assets in Treasure Trove Cove (1:25). Do something new in the spirit of other things.

I dunno. I haven't liked a single indie platformer yet barring Lobodestroyo, and even that is on the fence with it's thematic choice. I ALMOST backed SpookyPoo because of how off-the-walls weird it was.

This studio making this game is based on 3 developers in Barcelona, they are trying to do their best with what they got. It looks fun, it might not be entirely original but still I am supporting it. Its just $10 Bucks to get a digital copy of the game. They said that the game still needs polishing so Im giving them a chance :)

At least it's looking way more promising than Clive 'N' Wrench could ever hoped for.

It didn't remotely interest me. Especially after all of the "Look how similar to Banjo Kazooie we are!" stuff. And then when I watched their video it's nothing like Banjo Kazooie. They're just trying to ride on the success of others.

Except their whole advertising platform was "fans of Banjo Kazooie come buy us because nostalgia!" Couldn't stand it.

Games like this are failing left, right and centre on Kickstarter - it looks like Poi will fail in the same manner as this one did.

Partly I think these games are simply asking for too much - no-one is going to invest huge amounts in a brand-new company from developers they don't know from Adam.
But also, as others have remarked, many of them look largely interchangeable. Perhaps because the builds are so early.

BUMP!

Well looks like this game will be coming out on February 2nd. If you buy the game for the Wii U on the first week, you'll receive a discount price of $9.99, because after that, the game'll be $13.99 after the first week. ()

My opinion(s): Looks like Rainy Night Creations is giving the head start on releasing 3D platformer games this year. Nobody knows what's going with Gears For Breakfast's A Hat In Time, nor when will they release it for consoles, and Playtonic Games still hasn't told us about their progress with the Toybox(++) demo build of Yooka-Laylee. Don't worry, because I still haven't forgotten about Yooka-Laylee's release date in October of this year.

EDIT: Is it me or is nobody talking that much about this game? Am I, seriously, the only one talking about it?
