My favorite 3D platformer is Banjo-Tooie.

I'm well aware that from what I've heard, a good deal of fans prefer the original over Tooie because Tooie had a lot of backtracking involved to previous worlds or go through world-connected passageways just to get a specific Jiggy, but personally I didn't mind the backtracking in that game to unlock something else, and traveling around was for the most part pretty straightforward and fast. Plus it included a boss in every world, more moves and minigames you could replay anytime from the main menu with friends.

Close to that comes Sonic Adventure 1, which I liked for it's music and having some interesting level design, but my only gripe with it is that most of the characters'gameplay styles feel rather stiff or not really fleshed out compared to Sonic's who's given the most prominent stage lineup and having the most engaging gameplay out of them all.

Anyone else got something to add as their favourite game?

I'll pick a less obvious one:

Super Mario Sunshine.

It was the first 3D platformer I ever played and it blew my mind. The sheer freedom to do whatever the hell you want - even now there's not much that brings that feeling to me.

In three different classes (since they are very different in direction):

Collectathon:
1. Banjo-Kazooie
2. Super Mario 64 (DS)
3. Super Mario Sunshine
4. Banjo-Tooie
5. Donkey Kong 64

Performance:
1. Sonic Generations PS360
2. Sonic Colours Wii
3. Sonic Unleashed PS360
4. Sonic Adventure 2
5. Sonic Heroes

Precision:
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Super Mario 3D World
4. Super Mario 3D Land
5. Rayman 2

BTW, how is Jet Set Radio a platformer? It's an arcade game like Tony Hawk...

Nice summary of why Tooie is so great there, WyvernWings.

And speaking of Mario Sunshine, I honestly love that game way more than Mario 64, which might sound blasphemous, but I honestly think that Sunshine ironed out the control scheme from the N64 predecessor to something that's really great to control, such as now sliding off walls for easier timing with wall jumps, the spin jump which you can reach insane distances it without using FLUDD if you're skilled, and of course FLUDD itself in my eyes felt like a great mechanic with the various modes, too bad the Rocket and Turbo modes were oftentimes more used for some gimmicky platforming/puzzles, but I can live with it.

The only things I didn't like is how near-obscure a good chunk of the blue coins are hidden, like good luck trying to find a bunch of them without resorting to a guide, seriously. And a few challenges like steering the boat using FLUDD's spray trajectory, the lilypad river mini-course of DEATH, and the 'I'M A CHUCKSTER' secret course in Pianta Village are so aggrivating!
