Yes they are what's keeping us all unique at the moment as the avatar pictures are impossible to upload.

I can easily find my posts to see where I was up to in a thread by simply scrolling down to my banjo-threeie picture.

I've tried SO many images, thumbnails and even used programmes to re size to forum avatar size and the forum STILL wouldn't accept it so I gave up and made a signature.

Some of the ones I've seen are already a little big, but at least nobody's using the Mona Lisa (yet).

I like em, a maximum height should definitely be implemented. Maybe 250px.
Make the forum great again.

With a size limit sounds good. I think for a forum with this layout, a longer width with a smaller height would work really well. Scrubber's, for example, works really well, but I can't imagine sigs that are much taller working without being annoying.

Some just get big, but I don't see any reason to keep them off entirely.

Edit: and while I'm not familiar with phpBB forums, I do know that some others offer an option for individual members to turn off signatures/avatars so that the forum is free of obstructive images, without taking away the option for other people to have them if they want. Dunno if that's an option, but yeah.

I have no issues with images in signatures but they definitely do need to be limited to a maximum width and height (and possibly file-size, for bandwidth-saving purposes). I would say the images shouldn't be any wider than the width of the post and probably no higher than 5 or 6 lines of default-sized text. (Whatever that works out to in actual pixel dimensions, possibly rounded to nicer numbers.) That should give people who want to use a signature image plenty of space to work with, while keeping the images small enough (height-wise especially) that multiple posts should still be visible on screen at any time (at relatively average post length).

Maximum width: Whatever the default width is for a post/signature width. Limit to 10 pixels shorter then that.
Maximum height: 120 pixels has always looked nicest to me as a max height; 1/9th or 11.1111...% of my screen. Going any higher than 150 pixels is a big no from me and I'll just have to disable viewing any signatures through any means possible.

Now, how do you allow for lines of text as well in that?

No image: Up to 8 lines of text at the default size or smaller. If you use larger sizes, you reduce the number of lines you could use depending on the size. I don't know what the max height is; but twice the size as default means 4 lines of text.
With an image: Up to 3 lines of regular sized or smaller text, or one line of larger text.

Animation: I am in support of no form of animation (the most common being .gif). You get people who use annoying flashy gifs which makes the forum look very tacky. Any time I see a gif on a forum, I immediately block the image through ad block plus.
Woaaaah, it finally came out! :o

Putting restrictions on signature image size sounds fair. I like the image in my sig, but I wouldn't mind shrinking it if it was too big.

I don't think there should be any specific rule about that... no signature has bothered me so far. If someone gets a huuuuge signature, then one of the mods could just ask him to remove it, no big deal. :D I don't like putting rules if there's no need to, what is this, north korea? Just kidding. If it becomes an issue and people start to use huge signatures, then yeah.

If it becomes an issue, at least a width limit, because if a signature is too large in width it can make text spill out from the normal size of text boxes. A height limit is probably not necessary because people can just scroll down.

I presume an admin told you to make a poll, to see what the community thinks about using signature images, Taylor? Also, the poll is missing an option about using GIFs as your signature. Which make reading forums a chore if members are allowed to use them.

Limit the size.

Also, maybe an option to block everyone's signatures.

You can already do that in your user control panel, under board preferences, display options.

Oh wow there's a block signatures option? That's nice. I mean I get the use of signatures I really do, but man I don't know people have some that are really distracting.
