Voice Mumbling

Postby Rueckkoppler » Mon Mar 16, 2015 10:16 am

Let's talk voice mumbling!

I always loved these simple, silly sounds that gave the characters their personality with minimal effort. But (and I think this has to be said) in Nuts & Bolts, the developers changed the mumbling in a way that I didn't like at all.

Just compare Banjo Tooie's intro:

https://youtu.be/XnojxMvhg-Y?t=1m48s

To Nuts & Bolt's:

https://youtu.be/gjUjOo0tNN8?t=1m15s

It just doesn't sound as distinct as in the previous titles. In B-K & B-T, they had like 3-4 syllables that were played in some random order on every word of the dialog text. They sounded clear & right on spot and only had slight variations in them. In opposite to this, Nuts & Bolts had just some gibberish that was barely hearable and didn't really express the personality of their characters. In addition this, with only two seconds at every dialog line, it was SO short! I hope they'll go back to the clear style of the first two games!

Although The Completionist complained about this, I just loved it even more after listening to their own expression of voice mumbling: https://youtu.be/tOOoi0KZZNI?t=3m6s

What about you, do you agree? Were you also a bit disappointed by N&B voice mumbling?

I agree. I prefer the old mumbles, mostly because they lasted the entirety of the sentence. Obviously you can't please everybody, but I think in general people liked the mumbles of the original games.

What's your favorite gibberish voice?

Mine is Murphy in Rayman 2. I can't explain why, just thinking about it makes my day. The first time I heard it it was quite unexpected, then I wondered if Murphy was a pervert, if he just had a sore throat, or what the hell was going on. It's so funny.

Also, I always wondered if the guy who made Kazooie's voice also made the voice of this little fella:

I agree, the nuts n bolts voices where kinda shallow. In BK/BT you had the feeling they talk, since the speech went on for quite some time, making it feel like they are actually talking, in N&B it feels more like they just make a noise so you know who speaks and that's it! But that is really the least of N&Bs problems.

Also, bit off topic sorry, I like that Playtonic said they would not promise things and then not deliver on the promise.

Since Rare broke everyone's heart by showing this teaser https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLWLdO9GLWM and then delivering something completely different! Lesson learned I guess!

Very good point. The mumbling jibberish in Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie was much better than Nuts N Bolts, so I hope Project Ukulele adopts the original style
"Just wait until Banjo-Threeie..." Still waiting Grunty!

Old is best. Nuts and Bolt's mumbling is just really ignoreable and just skip skip because nothing important is ever talked about and not really that funny.

I'd prefer it if they could make it sound like a different language than random audio splices.

Thinking about it, the voice could be the sound the actual bat and chameleon but mumbled. no reason for a special type or a made up sound based on the appearance. Thou the appearance can have an interesting connection to the sound of the voice.

I haven't seen that, but N64's Banjo-Kazooie was really superior with the mumbling voice thing. In the original the voice had some kind of presence. In Nuts and Bolts it was disappointing.

The best voice mumble was Rubee from Banjo-Kazooie's Gobi's Valley hands down. And I agree that the mumbles from the original games were by far the best.
