Well, I've lurked these forums for a year now, but this topic specifically called out to me to register an account, so hey all!
First of all, it completely sucks that the Wii U version of the game was cancelled, and I feel for the Wii U owners that backed it.
However, I look at one game that came out this year and understand why it got cancelled/technical issues arose: Mighty No. 9.
That too, was a KS game that was promised for all consoles. After many delays/technical issues, it finally came out...and it was mediocre at best, to put it nicely.
Now, while the game came out on all it's intended platforms, I would almost bet that the Wii U version was the one giving them issues, being nowhere near as powerful as everything else. Hence delays and whatnot. And it still came out later on Wii U than almost every other platform it was scheduled for. And they had a bigger team than Playtonic does.
Playtonic must have realized this and tried to work through it, but just couldn't deal, with an engine that is optimized for most platforms except that specific platform.
Yes, Mario and other first party titles run well on it, because they are made specifically for that platform. Most of the third-party titles mentioned earlier in this thread, I.e, Watch Dogs, Batman: Arkham Origins, etc., were all mediocre at best on the Wii U.
So that is my reasoning why they decided to move on from Wii U. I do admit, they could have tried to give a better/sooner update, but game development is a fickle mistress, plus if they are working closely with Nintendo on the Switch version, maybe there's an NDA in place not allowing them to talk about the "technical limitations" they previously experienced.
