New Characters Gender?

Postby GameFreak » Mon Apr 13, 2015 3:08 am

One thing that I don't think has been talked about is the gender of the new main duo in Project Ukulele? Will they be male and female like in Bk or perhaps same gender? Besides the way they actually look, its the gender of them I really have been pondering over.

We don't know.

I'm fine with anything, but I'd prefer them to look as neutral as possible. Kazooie, for example, is really ambiguous despite being female. I never knew she was a girl when I was younger.

I really hope that the lizard would be female, and the bird would be male.

So they can be different to the original duo, Banjo and Kazooie.

I don't think it matters, but make them both ambiguous, like how the original did.

I'm seeing the reptilian character as a female.

I also didn't know that Kazooie was a female for quite a long time after having played Banjo-Kazooie!

It was hard to know Kazooie was a female when I was younger cuz she was very tomboyish and I couldn't read when people refer to her as a she. It actually wasn't until nuts and bolts, where they gave her a more feminine appearance I got her gender. I actually hope the new duo will have a similar character to Kazooie. A cool character who's not afraid to tell it as it is.

I would prefer it to be like the good old banjo games with the lizard as a male and 2nd character as female.

I think it would be interesting if the main character were female and the sidekick were male (since it's opposite to Banjo and Kazooie), but I doubt I'd really care all that much as long as the gameplay were fun and interesting and kept me engaged.

Female protagonist, male sidekick, but I really hope they stick almost entirely to gender pronouns and leave it at that - keep them androgynous and focus more on the gameplay, don't make a big deal out of either characters gender. Kazooie was a great example - only mentioned she was female in two or three sentences, and the voice was androgynous. Then Microsoft updated her and gave her long eyelashes and guuh. :/

I reckon, right, that one of the heroes has to have castrated themselves before puberty to ensure that they have a really high pitch whiny voice, and they had plastic surgery so they can appear to be white...

Wait what? There was a famous singer that did the same thing?

I was just curious bout the age. Not that it will affect me or the game in anyway. Just something that got me thinking. ;)

I like the concept of a trans character, and there definitely needs to be more properly represented trans/lgbt characters in games, but I feel Ukulele is likely to play this element a bit safe - maybe a single, non-major NPC who gets a throwaway line?

Banjo Tooie had Jolly Roger and Merry Maggie, clearly not a conventional couple, but the portrayal of Maggie was somewhat... Demeaning, perhaps? If they include a trans character in Ukulele it should probably be an understated mention rather than the main heroes.
(And for the sake of argument, I happen to be transgender. Let the flame wars commence!)

I'm all for diversifying the characters represented in video games, but as Gildas said, I'm not sure Ukulele is that type of game. It's not trying to be overly groundbreaking and revolutionary; in fact, it's playing on nostalgia and is aiming for as wide an audience as possible. Controversial characters is not something it needs to succeed.

My hope is that Ukulele's visuals, gameplay, music and humour is enough to make the game stand out amongst the crowd. Characterisation is cool, of course, but I want it to focus on personality rather than gender/back-story etc.

I'd like 1 Guy and 1 Girl character. Its a good balance, just like BK.
