Too much like Banjo-Kazooie?

Postby Lupo » Fri May 01, 2015 10:32 am

Hello,

Recently, some people I have shared the YL with have said that they are worries that it will be too much of a Banjo-Kazooie clone rather than offering enough brand new concepts, saying that trying too hard to be nostalgic could be a drawback for the game.

Personally, I do not mind too much if that is a case, but we haven't really seen enough of the game to know. I think the game will probably have a good combination of Banjo-Kazooie-ness plus new concepts.

What are your thoughts on this?
Leon

While I want it to be a traditional 3D platformer, I do agree that it shouldn't be too much like Banjo-Kazooie (except for what is needed to make it a good 3D platformer, there are some ingredients you can't do without). At this moment, it does feel a little bit too close. I hope it gets its own identity eventually so that we can stop thinking about it as a wannabe Banjo-Threeie. I like that it is a spiritual successor, but just spiritual, not more. Ultimately I won't know until the game is out and in my hands.

Oh also I hope they won't go down the road of Banjo-Kazooie fan service...

I do not care if it's a carbon copy of Banjo. As long as there are new levels, I know I'll enjoy it.

I don't think it will be too similar though. The moves for instance, using a "grappling hook" tongue to swing from things, are clearly nothing like Banjo and will offer lots of new challenges.

I hope that they aim for a similar type of humor and wackie characters... and of course weird sounds effects! That's almost everything I need - aside great worlds & music, of course.

The problem is that each person will want it to fall somewhere on the scale between full nostalgia B-K and it's own new identity modern platformer. Realistically they're not going to be able to please everyone, but personally I think they're getting a good balance from the initial videos.

Personally I was surprised by the similarity so far. The font, the game name, the extra height jump move. - Certainly not disappointed though.

I loved Banjo Kazooie so even if it is similar I wouldn't mind! :D

But I am sure Playtonic knows what they're doing to make it stand out as a successful spiritual successor. :)
Hey there fellow reader! I suppose I gained your interest somehow? It's nice having someone reading me. It feels so.. ticklish I should say. Thanks for that!

I've waited years to play a new 3D collectathon platformer game made by Rareware developers, so I'm not bothered in the slightest that it will be too much like Banjo-Kazooie. If anything, I find it already has its own unique thing going, and if it was a completely carbon copy of its predecessor - then it would be just like Mighty No 9. Hell, even the main protagonists are blatant carbon copies of Mega Man's main characters.

I don't think anyone would want a straight copy that does everything BK did. Looking at what stood out and what fans liked is enough.

Never played Tooie. How different was that?

It felt actually a slightly worse: a bit too linear with just one path and a bit of trees surrounding it. I'm hoping they'll create huge areas with multiple different things in it. But I mean you can't tell anything about that yet, maybe we'll see it a bit better in 5 hours.

My opinion:
It can't be too close to BK!
The closer the better!! :)

Being it's a spiritual successor, to resemble BK is the point.

Can't think of a game for it to better be like, honestly. Shoot for one of the best. I have no qualms with large similarities.

Also in the "i thought that was the point" boat.
